Laptop Theft Security
Well I just bought a laptop and the first thing that came to mind was theft recovery. Ive seen alot of sites offering to sell their tracking software for ungodly amounts, but what interested me more was something free. Ive thought about irc bots connecting to servers and pasting an ip address in a channel. Something that could be logged by other irc clients and then taking it from there. Has anyone ever seen something like this or know where to find one?

mail is just as easy..
you could setup a mailserver to send the requested data (IP adress etc) to a mail adress..
it could be a simple executable that starts with windows startup (not the startmenu startup)
I'd bet someone could help you out with that..

Also, don't forget to buy a Kensington lock for you laptop

yeah something like that I guess..
I think that could be written in c/c++ and easily hidden somewhere in the windows\system or system32 folder..
give it a nice name like lapsrv.exe and noone will ever figure out it has the intention it has..
the only trouble is: If the thief steals the laptop and first thing he does is installing the OS from scrach (fdisk / format)
laptop vendors could build a hardware feature to do this kind of thing..
but what about firewalls.. the traffic could easily be stopped..
