    No kids allowed on P2P?

Get out your pencils and get ready to write your congressman. Even though I'm the father of 3 and tend to have conservative views where my children are concerned, this really pisses me off.

update A bill introduced Thursday in Congress would require file-swapping companies to get parental permission before allowing minors to use their services.

The bill, called the Protecting Children from Peer-to-Peer Pornography (P4) Act and sponsored by Reps. Joe Pitts, R-Pa., and Chris John, D-La., would require the Federal Trade Commission to regulate peer-to-peer networks and take steps to ensure that children aren't accidentally coming across porn.

The bill's sponsors said as many as 40 percent of all files traded on the networks are porn.

"Our legislation gives parents the tools they need to protect their children from pornography and threats to privacy posed by peer-to-peer file-trading networks," Pitts said in a statement. "By working together to protect children, we are building a broad and bipartisan coalition."

The bill calls on the FTC to require peer-to-peer companies to get parental permission before minors use their services. It also would require peer-to-peer companies to honor the wishes of parents who have put a "do not install" beacon in their computers, indicating that they don't want file-swapping software on their children's machines. However, such technology has yet to be developed, and it's unclear how such a beacon would work.
Now....I have the RIAA telling me that P2P is mainly used for trading music, but congress says it's a flea market for p0rn. I SAY that it is merely a tool to facilitate the free flow of information. Like any other tool, it can be abused...but I don't see congress making lug wrenchs illegal because some poor slob bashed someones head in with one. If this crap continues they might as well just go ahead and scrap the internet (probably just what both groups want anyway) and let us all just build a big fire and use smoke signals to communicate.

[edit] Please note that any time you see the words "bipartisan coalition" it means that BOTH parties are getting ready to SCREW the public. [/edit]

Okay now the RIAA is starting to get on my nerves. This **** is so assanine (SP). How the hell is the FTC going to monitor a network like kazaa? there is no central server. There is no way to mkae sure everybody on the network complies. Just look at kazaa lite. if they could monitor it that well then kazaa lite would be useless because they would have it blocked out of the system. But hey what do us computer users know? we're not congressmen so how are we supposed to know what we want to look at. I would suggest anybody out there who hasnt allready read 1984 by orwell. BIG BROTHER is TRYING to watch you

well i guess the only way to be sure would be using memberships/credit cards like the porn sites do....that keep ALL minors out. dosen't it?

my guess is that this is being "sponsored" by the RIAA and promoted by their 'bitches' in yet another attempt to stay alive in a century that they dont belong in.

guess they feel that if they try everything they can think of something will work

    =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

There is no way to mkae sure everybody on the network complies.

    =+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+

thats the whole point ZM. if they can't comply to this "outstanding act of morality" (j/k) then they (p2p networks) will finally be declared illegal and shut down so all the starving superstars will be able to eat again

The music industry as it is cannot grow with the rest of us. The only way it can survive is to shackle technology, put restrictions on creativity and declare us all criminals.

(sorry! I hurt my back last week and had to take painkillers a while ago. Not I have verbal diarrhea!)

Ishbar > sorry to be a nit-picker, but they can and do monitor p2p, hency the some 1000+ subpoenas the RIAA has haneded out so far in their crusade.

It seems like the stupidity of big organizations (RIAA, SCO) grows by leaps and bounds each day. I'm just waiting to see the RIAA strike a deal with SCO over something even more stupid than what they are already persuing. Hmm, better yet, I wonder wether the RIAA or SCO will go bankrupt first trying to squeeze a few extra pennies out of consumers?
