    Angry Popups on my desktop...

I keep getting these ads popping up on my computer, just out of the blue. Not when I'm surfing or doing anything for that matter, I'll leave my system on overnight and get up the next morning and there twenty or so of these messages waiting for me to click ok..?..?..?

Any thoughts or ways to get rid of them?

    thanx in advance.

This sounds like spyware/adware crap you have accidentally loaded.

Try http://www.pchell.com/support/spyware.shtml as a starting point.

    Hi,

You can try Ad-aware and Spybot to try to remove spyware of your PC. These two programs are ONE of the best three programs out there and many times Ad-aware find things Spybot doesn't and vice versa. That's why is a good idea to use both.

If these programs don't work as expected then Spy Sweeper should do the job.

You can get it for free HERE

    Good luck,

Actually, it sounds like Windows Messenger pop-ups.

    This might help: http://www.dvdsqueeze.com/windowsmessage.htm

If you are using Win ME or 98 you might want to get a firewall to block ports 135-139.

Im not sure about this but couldn't you also just disable netbios with those old 9x systems? Whenever I buy a new Mafia$oft computer I usually disable all the needless stuff that they claim is a 'service' to me and ever since then I've never seen one single MSN popup for almost years now.

I thought about a few of those things, but there comeing up on a W2K Server machine, also I just installed it and got it up and running so I don't think its any spyware. I think MsMittens may be correct , thanks for the port numbers , now all I have to do is figure out how to close those ports.

    In windows 2000, go here:

Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services

Here, disable "Messenger" (or something simillar, I'd have to check at home)

    Windows XP
Goto: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services...

Stop then disable "Messenger" by right clicking on properties and selecting stop/disable.

I have been using Zone Alarm Pro on a W2K server for some time now (why no hardware firewall is a long, sad story) and it is quite useful for controlling port access. The free version has less flexibility and is less useful for a server. Look them over at http://www.zonelabs.com.

Also, a handy accessory with Zone Alarm (and some other firewalls) is Zone Log at http://zonelog.co.uk/downloads.html
