Should you monitor your kids activity on the computer?

This has already started to be discussed here

    The question is:

Do you believe that your kids activities on the computer should be monitored by you or do you believe that there should be no recording of kids your kids activities on the computer.

My belief on this is It's my kid, my computer, my house. Now I don't have any children yet but if I did I would want to know what my child was doing on the computer.

Just trying to get your thoughts, and opinions on this.

I give this question a yes and no answer
Yes I would want to know what my kid was doing for the reason that I wouldn't want them to learn how to do or build something that would hurt themselves or others around them and viewing inappropriate content
For my no answer I want to be able to trust my kid to the point that what they are doing on the computer is teaching them useful things that they can use

I think almost all parents will say YES to monitoring their children's Intenet activity.

Perhaps the better question is "Do you believe that parents have, in an attempt to head off questionable or malicious activities conducted via the Internet, a responsibility to teach their children good morals, thereby building trust and reducing the need for constant monitoring?

My dad checks sometimes what sites I have visited (I just clear the history lol, but sometimes I forget), he caught me in the past when I went to some porn sites(2y ago, now I use kazaa for that, maybe once a week). There is nothing wrong with it when parents monitor these activities but things you say on msn and such, I think that goes to far. Monitoring your child? I think there just has to be some trust.

When my sones reach an age where they are allowed to use the net unsupervised (think teen age years) I will monitor their activiety, especaly in chat or mesenger. Kids are nieve (I am not that removed form my teenage years to think other wise). There is a special form of arrogence and ignorace that comes with being a teen, as a parent it is my job to let them explore the world, and stay safe at the same time.

Do I trust my kids, yes, do I trust the nut jobs on the net, no. So I have two chocies, eaither shater my kids innocence at a very young age, or let them grow up on their own but monitor their actiities to make sure they don't get hurt.

cheyenne1212 That sounds normal to me but they will just delete the Temporary Internet Files/ Clear the history so how can you check them then? When you really want to monitor everything your child does (IM's included)I think you're sick and have to go to a psychiatrist(don't know how it's spelled but you know what I mean). Even installing some monitoring program or restricting access in IE from various sites goes to far, that means you don't trust your kid.
What cheyenne1212 says is normal for me.
bballad my parents don't monitor me at all and I'm pretty normal I guess, you have to let your kid be more independent, they learn by their own what's good and what's not(when it deals with internet stuff ofcourse)
Monitoring the websites they visit isn't a big problem. On IM's they can talk to their friends about sex/drugs/maybe hacking or something like that. I don't think your kid would appreciate it when you do that. I smoked weed a few times, but I'm not stupid enough to continue smoking it, I don't want to get addicted to it, for cigs it's already to late lol.

I don't see why one would be sick if they monitored their kids activities. Your right the kids probably will delete the history, and cookies, but what are they gonna do if I have a spy program on there that they don't know about? I believe its every parents right to do what they feel neccessary to protect there kids.

Do I sense a bit of contradiction here.

There are free programs available to recover internet activities, even if you have flushed the tif files and flushed the history. So count yourself lucky that your dad did not discover them. In my humble opinion, monitoring IMs is not is not "sick." Consider all of the teenage suicides being coordinated via online dating services and IM. (Especially Japanese Teens) If parents knew about the discussions many of these death could have been prevented and healthy lives restored. I realize that there is a fine line bordering on the realm of over protective, but keeping tabs on children is essential for their well being.

Its tough decision to find out where the line has to be drawn as far as monitoring your children's online activities. And its not as simple as using an age guildeline. It really (imho) depends on the parent(s) relationship with their child and his/her personality. I mean if your kid is one of those always honest, respectul, etc parents-dream type kids, then really just cursory checking up on histroy and such would suffice. On the other hand you could have a child that frequently lies, etc who would require considerably more effort to keep tabs on. Also another good reason for always having a certain element of monitoring capablity is to keep p2p apps off your childs computer, as you could end up facing a lawsuit from the RIAA, as some families are already dealing with situations like that.

cheyenne1212 > I agree with you that is you provide the internet connection and the computer, to a certain extent that voids a level of privacy for the child, because its your property they are using as privilege, not a right.
You're not your post count, You're not your avatar or sig, You're not how fast your internet connection is, You are not your processor, hard drive, or graphics card. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of AO
