Hey again thnx for helpin that last thread didn't mean to offend anyone asking for help..

Well I don't really know much computers just a tad to do what i need to do.. ANywho..about my last post..I remember after that started happening to my computer I saw a file called svchost???
what's svchost?

all of the service configurations for your o/s. It enables you to understand and
learn what services are essential and the ones you can disable. After printing
the info you can adjust settings to you needs. Make sure you read everything
twice before making changes. To do this go to start=>run=>type
"services.msc" => o.k. Again make sure you read everything twice before changing.

Please do not think that I am patronising or anything like that, but my advice to all non-technical users tends to be the same:

If it worked out of the box: leave it alone...if it didn't..take it, and the box back.

If it ain't broke...don't try to fix it!

As well as viruses, bots, rats, trojans and all the malware, there are a number of hoaxes that are maliciously intended to trick the unwary into "shooting themselves in the foot", this is frequently called "social engineering" You are told that some file or other contains a "real bad virus" (hey their grammar alone tends to give them away ) You are advised to search for and delete this file, when it is a fundamental and normal part of your operating system.

I am a little concerned in that you asked a fairly specific technical question for someone who claims to be non-technical. It is very true that most operating systems contain a lot of "baggage" that a particular individual may not need, and which, if deleted, would make things work faster. I would strongly recommend that you get to know the inner workings of your OS, and read up on more than one opinion before you venture along such a course of action.

I strongly advise, as I hope I did before, that you get a good antivirus and firewall, that you keep them up to date, and that you get specialist spyware and bot defences such as Spybot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware 6. Keep these up to date as well, and make it a habit to use their scanning facilities, preferably on a daily basis. These should form the basis of your defence, and will identify files that are specifically related to malware. I recommend that anything else is left well alone! Hey...if the Pros don't know it's a bad guy...what chance do we have?

nihil, i totally agree. I posted with the intension of enabeling angiee to
become a little more familiar with what services,processes are associated with svchost.

I in no way intended to contradict or criticise Tidal's post...I think we both agree,and his post is very valid and on topic. My concern was that Angiee may have heard one of those "urban myths" or malicious hoaxes, and my comments were intended to advise all non-technical newbies against these.

I think that there was one of those scams called "sulfnbunk" or something like that, only recently.It advised people to delete a perfecly innocent windows file (if anything in windows can be so described? )

My comment about getting multiple opinions is also directed well away fom anyone in this forum; isn't this where we come for multiple opinions?.....I am sure we have all read those magazine articles and seen the claims of alleged windows "tweaking" programs............There are a lot of different opinions around..........if it were obvious, there would only be ONE opinion?. I guess I was warning against "false prophets".............or profits?

nihil, i didn't asume for one minute that you were in any way criticising
me. i definately didn't see it that way. lol. I am at the very first
stages of this endless learning process, and trying to understand as much
as i can from this site. If you have been to this site I mentionedwhat would your opinion
be on some of the changes reccomended? Is it a piece of the puzzle that i
should be becoming more familiar with? Any advice greatly appreciated.
