jobs for those in security field?

I think computer security would be a great field to get into, but what kind of jobs can I get with a degree in this field?

You can be a 'computer security consultant' , testing compaines' security from the outside, or a sysadmin.

My advice is to be wary of specialising too early................you may "paint yourself into a corner".

It may seem glamorous, but it is a pretty restricted area...catch 22..."what experience have you got son?......sorry son you need more experience"....................but where do you get the experience in the first place? A college diploma is NOT experience.

I recommend learning about IT management, operating systems, and security principles. But the most important is to learn about business!.................99% of businesses know nothing about security, they don't even realise that they have a problem................hard to get any sort of budget in that environment?................no budget = no job.

Believe me....I have 20 years' experience.................it's a rearguard action!

That's good point about the experience. Is it easier to get into IT management? I was actually also considering my MBA in Tech management, but I keep hearing so many people say that they can't get jobs in the computer field right now.

I like what nihil talked about. Don't specialize right away. It might be good to find a vertical market you are interested in, and that there is a growing need for IT. For example, we are specialists in working in the medical field providing doctor practices and hospitals with HIPPA compliance; this relative to IT and IT security of data. In addition, we work with the small to medium sized businesses (SMB) market while we focus on growing our vertical markets. You are doing the right thing by talking with people and asking for opinions. Take some, leave the rest.

I would go for an MBA...................set you up a lot better............you go in the boardroom or whatever you call it Stateside, and your fellow EVPs have to respect you.........because they have NO BETTER QUALIFICATION.......................you have as much right as they do...marketing...media..bean counter.....you know..............

An MBA is a worldwide acknowledged qualification...............if you turn down an opportunity like that I will not let you buy me a beer when you come over to Europe!!!!

Yes, the MBA does appeal to me since it's application is pretty broad. I thought about getting certified too, but then I'm back to the situation of "no experience".

Just my bit of input, Im in college currently and I was going to major in computer science and eng. Turns out, its so much easier (talking to others) in getting a job if you first major in business (since thats what all companies are, a business) and then go after the certs etc. like Cisco and the like. I found (daddy knows best) that you can earn more money that way too. He currently does distaster recovery and makes a nice chunk of change. I think what I will do is first get my foot into a company, then have them pay for the certs etc. Most, not all, will pay for your education.
