I'm going to be needing a laptop in a couple of weeks. Anyone have an opinion on a Sony Vaio PCGGGRT170 ?

The only bad comments I found untill now are the limited battery life (I don't care) and the heat...

Can I get anything better within a USD 2,500 budget?

But after looking at the specs of your sony I think that you have found the better deal.

I have a Compaq Presario 2500 laptop I paid 1300 for it.

It has a P4 2.4
40GB HD
ATI 64MB card
512MB DDR Ram
CD-RW/DVD combo
and a Floppy.

The battery only lasts about two and half hours.

So I guess my final conclusion is that what you have picked out is probably a pretty good deal. I wouldn't think that heat would be to much of a concern, just as you kept the fans exsposed where that can get air.

As far as cooling goes, I thinkg the Alienware laptop would be your better bet. I think you might also get better framerate if your planning on playing some games. However if you use it for buisness you will definitely have a "distinct, and colorful" laptop. .

thing has dual monitor out, TV in, a REMOTE control, dual cd-roms.... i practically wanted to throw my new dell out his window and jack his laptop... they're some sweet systems

Something important you may want to consider is are you going to be able to dual boot that laptop into your favorite *nix OS? Make sure you'll have the proper driver support and such to make sure that all the built-in hardware will be recognized by the OS of your choice.

You know, just something to consider.
