    Arafat sacks Mahmoud Abbas

    As reported byhttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/mid...st/3085810.stm

    Quote:

"Addressing more than 80 Palestinian MPs in Ramallah, "Arafat accepted the prime minister's resignation", said one of those present, Mohammed Hourani."

"Today, we lost an honest prime minister who only wanted to serve his people," he added.

What chance for peace when Arafat acts in such an arrogant manner ??

Specifically, Arafat has refused to give control of the security forces to Abbas so that he could crack down on militants, most of whom want to see Israel destroyed.

he didn't get the power he wanted that's why he quit(ed), but he didn't want much just to go against the terrorists group and Arafat didn't agree that's why he quited!

Its irrelivant what he wanted in the spacifict. his position is very spacificly spelled out in their goverment, he was not happy with the power he had so he made a power grabe to get more, they inteligently said no and keept their checks and balances in place, he went home to cry to mommy.

    In reply to bballad:

Strictly speaking, he wasn't sacked, but on the other hand he stated it was impossible for him to do his job, as he was not given control over the Palestinian security forces.
IMHO he was a man who was genuinely trying to bridge the gap between Palestine & Israel.

In essence, he wanted to use the Palestinian security forces to round up members of terrorist organisations like Hamas, in order that both sides could have a genuine cease fire, and then move on to the more important issues.

Arafat deliberately blocked this (he is a politician with high hopes).

"Checks & balances" + "going home to cry to mommy" - perhaps you could explain what you meant by that.

In their constitution they have spelled out which job has what athority, constitunaly Arafat has controll over the security forces, this guy knew he could beat arafat in an election to get the job that comes with command of the armed forces so he attempeted to steal it and commbind all the power int oone position. This would be like president bush demanding the ablity to rule laws unconstitutional be removed to the supream court and given to him.

When his power grabe faild this man whined and resigned, insted of doing the job he was elected to do with the power he had. As it is he was in control of the palaistinian police force, it seems to me rounding up dissadents is a job for the police and not teh army (palistinian defense forces.)

Face it Arafat is the legaly elected president, he is in charge of the army and navy, and just like the american presidant he can lose that power in an election.
