I also had that file appear on my desktop a couple of days ago. When Xemacs creates a backup of a file that you are working on it appends a '~` onto the end of the file name. I figured that I opened an unnamed file in Xemacs and then when I closed the window Xemacs created a file called '~' on my desktop.
After reading this thread however, I'm going to look into the possibility of something more malicious. I guess my real question is, are you using Xemacs as your text editor?

Fleabite...or should I say Robert? is correct......well worth a try but they do not allways work
Please do a search for, download and update the following:
SpyBot search & destroy
AdAware 6.0 ..........that's from lavasoft in Sweden
then run them and see what they find............keep us posted

I hope you are not using OutlookExpress for mail?............Please try Eudora..........or anything?

Thanks all! I just deleted the file, so i think it was just a temp file that decided to stick around.

Actually i prefer Bob but anyways yeah i know they do not always work. Im just saying thats the one i prefer to use to double check my system. I also use other programs etc... to check but when i am thats usually my second or third.

That file is a temporary "cache" of your email address book entries, safe to delete.
