Debian 3.0 and XFree86 ?'s
Hello, I kinda have a problem. I just got done downloading Debian 3.0 Everything installs fine but when i goto log in X wont start. It gives the error No Screens found. I have searched here and on google and tried everything i could think of. Still no Luck. I think the error may lie between the keyboard and the chair b/c Knoppix boots up fine Slackware works, along with Suse, Mandrake and Redhat.
The only thing i could think of is, I went and checked what version of X came on the Slackware CD it says Xfree86 4.3.0 while the debian CD says 4.1.0. Could this be causing the problem?
System Specs:
Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum
Athlon XP 1800
768mb ram
Geforce 4 Mx440
Onboard Realtek 8139 NIC
Sound C-Media
WD HDD 20gig
Smart Card reader
floppy
and some generic CDRW (ripped from a gateway comp)
I also have the Xfree86 error log file if that will help.

You will need the NVIDIA drivers.
Get them from their website: http://www.nvidia.com/linux
Read the instructions & off you go.
Let me know how you get on.

It don't think it recognizes your card , newer card old xfree? . The nvidia drivers should work and they are much better anyways. Debian is not a bleeding edge distro they tend to stay with the tried and true as you can see by the version/age of x you get.

h4ck.51gn, XFree86 is the unix desktop server app. It's mainly for running an xterm, or Gnome, KDE, blackbox, flubox window managers. Without it you can't run Desktop app's or a desktop.
hope that explains it for you

Ok i fixed it. If anyone has a similar problem this is what i did.
First I reinstall with the bf24 options to load the 2.4.x kernel
Second I recompiled the kernel for all the **** on my system
And Finally i Downloaded the dirvers from nvidia and installed them.
