    New Worm

Hey i was just cruisin the web when i came across this.
    Thought i might post it.....

New E-Mail Worm Targets Hole in Internet Explorer
    20 Sep 2003
Anti-virus companies warned on Thursday of a new computer worm circulating through e-mail that purports to be security software from Microsoft Corp. but actually tries to disable security programs that are already running.

The worm, dubbed "Swen" or "Gibe," takes advantage of a two-year-old hole in Internet Explorer and affects systems that have not installed a patch for that security hole, according to Internet security company Network Associates Inc.

The malicious program arrives as an attachment to an e-mail pretending to contain a patch for holes in Internet Explorer, Outlook and Outlook Express and then mails itself off to addresses located on the victim's computer.

The worm also can spread over Internet relay chat and the KaZaa peer-to-peer network, as well as copy itself over shared networks, Network Associates said.

When it infects a computer it alerts a Web site that appears to be counting the infections, according to Symantec Corp., another Internet security outfit. The number of the counter was near 760,000 by Thursday afternoon.

Network Associates rated the worm a low risk for corporate users and a medium risk for home users. The company and rival Symantec, among others, were offering anti-virus updates that detects and removes the worm.

Microsoft has cautioned customers in the past against e-mail software updates, saying it does not distribute patches that way but rather directs them to its Web site.

Please note: Informtion already posted in the Microsoft Security Thread on this Worm..

    Other Thread

While warnings on New worms are posted else where, and the information is relevent to both forums.. Users Will need to RTFM..ie the site FAQ.. regarding posting threads.
    !/ Search before Posting..
2/ Post in the appropriate Forum..
3/ Give the Thread an appropriate Title..

Please note This is not a dig at reset_button alone.. he most likley checked the "Antivirus Forum" before posting. He has done a fair to good job in the post.. But if posting in the AV section, a good idea is to also post info from a AV company.. ie a Link to an AV info page..

    Like this.. Symantec's Swen Page

A bit of research helps us a lot.. Posting in the correct forum helps disorganised farts like me stay organised.. It helps weed the crappy news articals out of the clutter..

So full marks for posting in the correct Forum..

    Cheers

    reset_button,

No need to appologise.. you have atleast posted in the correct forum..unlike the ppl who insist on posting Virii/Worm/trojan warnings in the MS Security forum.. while most virus are MS related.. perhaps the AV forum is no longer needed and should be closed.. an a sub forum in MS security forum be started just for discussion regarding MS viruses..
