Concept of Proxy Severs & use.

I have problem understanding the concept of “Proxy Severs”. I am new to field of computers and my scope of knowledge is very limited but willing to go extra mile to gain the subject knowledge.I was reading about proxy sever at the following http://www.the-scream.co.uk/html/resources/proxies.html link and a http://directory.google.com/Top/Comp...Proxies/Free/. I have two queries:-

1.Do I have to download a pieces o software and installed on my system , then connect to the internet or do have to visited a website and through that site browse the net. Which option is more safe? I down loaded a proxy sever named “AiSAliveProxyServer” but that is for 15 day trial period only .Can any one suggest only freeware proxy severs for IP hiding/masking and other stuff required to remain a anonymous on net.(For windows)

2. Is this “Proxy Sever” used to hide IP address same was the one used to test server side scripting (ASP& JSP)? Here my reference is in regards to IIS for WinNT and personal web sever for Win98.

if your goal for using a proxy is to be anonymous in front of the www, running Proxy on your server won't help u much.

The real question is: what services do u expect from the proxy ?

Seems that you are researching the use of CGI proxies to surf anonymously.

These proxies work in the much in the same way as normal proxies in that it takes you http request and directs it to the end system. Its basically a middleman, used in networks to hide the internal network from the outside. All requests to yahoo or cnn or what not come from the proxies address and not yours.

CGI proxies require no installation. Basically you go to a website like http://www.the-cloak.com/login.html , you then put in the site you want to go to, and 'The cloak' sends the request for you. You can check this out by going to a site like http://www.whatismyip.com using your connection then using a CGI proxy connection.

This is to summaries my finding in last few days about proxy severs. I am still not been able to completely understand the concept behind proxy severs and IP hiding ; your suggestion and ideas are invited.

# I have found out that there are 3 ways to use a proxy sever for hiding your IP address:-

1. Add the IP address of the proxy sever in your connection tab .As described by the Star****ers|Incin in the above post.
2. use visit such as www.anonymization.net , which is free, and use the address bar ,provided on the web page, to type in URL you want to visit.
3. One can download an address from sites like http://www.anonymization.net and use it two surf the web.

First, the proxy server acts as an intermediary, helping users on a private network get information from the Internet when they need it, while ensuring that network security is maintained. Second, a proxy server may store frequently requested information in a local disk cache, rapidly delivering it to multiple users without having to go back to the Internet to get it.

anonymous browsing is legal provided that you don't use your "invisbilty" for any malicious net activities, anonymous browsing hides your identity from the sites you visit and hide your surfing from local snooping. I think this "proxy" thingy is totally different from serverside programming or scripting, and has nothing to do with testing either. anyway, u can try www.cloak.com for a proxy for anonymous browsing.

Greetings every one.
While using a free proxy sever (like anonymization.net; 203.113.34.239 -80; 209.113.34.239 -80) I have not been able to login at antonline.com and yahoo.com.

# When a tried to login at antionline.com, my control panel is displayed (means I have logged on successfully) but there is no option of *posting a reply* and * to start a new thread*.So, it means I am still logged on as a guest !?!
But I have noticed, under the name of few members it says proxy detected.
Does antonline support login via proxy ?
# At yahoo.com when a tried to login , it say *Page not found*!?!

Probably the most likely problem you are having now is that the proxy that you are using is blocking cookies between you and the site so the sites (Antionline.com and Yahoo.com) let you log in and then when you try to navigate from there it 'forgets' that you are logged in because it does not have the cookies from your browser telling the sites your user information. If you simply want to use a proxy for WWW surfing you can find a short list of good ones at http://void.ru (even though its in Russian the proxies are in the top right in the format of IP:Port) you can use these to copy/paste into your browser's connection tab under proxy.

I forgot to mention before that most of these proxies are taken off of the site after about a day so to ensure that you have a good one (fast and secure) check back daily and change the IP/Port in your proxy settings.
