    Networked Cpu's

Ok...i just finish networking 2 of my computers. one is running a cable modem and a fire wall....the other one is sharing the internet connection. Is it sharing the fire wall too?...if not .. do i need o get one up? or will the host CPU cover both of them?

    Is the topology like this:

Cable Modem ------------ PC Firewall ------------- Second PC

Which is good, but might require 2 Network Cards in the PC Firewall.

    Or is it like this

PC Firewall --------------- Cable Modem ------------- Second PC

This offers no protection to your second PC!

You don't necessarily need a second firewall.

Put 2 Network cards in the PC with the firewall and connect the Cable Modem to 1 and the 'internal' network to the other?

Is your firewall software ? I assume so.

If you search google for something like 'using [insert your OS here] as a firewall and router' you should get some good tips.

If you don't, let me know what OS you are using and I'll see if I can dig something up.

ideally you would want something like this.

    cable from wall ----> cable modem ---> pc 1 w/firewall (nic 0) ---> pc 1 w/firewall (nic 1) ----> hub/switch ----> pc 2

you could put a firewall on pc2 if you wanted, all depends on what you are attempting to do in regards to security. if you just want a simple network, this setup should work fine for you.
just making some minor adjustments to your system....

you misunderstood the topic....the CPUs are already succesfully networked. I just need to know about the security

And yes ... the firewall is software...im runnin Windows 2ooo pro on both

    oops...steve misunderstood

I'm not sure what's been misunderstood here. I understand that the PC are currently networked.

Can you describe/draw how they are connected to eachother and the cable modem

I would still advise you go for the 2 network cards and 1 firewall topology since:

You can add new equipment to your network and it will be protected without having to add another firewall.

You only have 1 machine & firewall that is exposed directly to the internet and so reduces your risk

You only have 1 peice of firewall software to keep correctly configured and up to date.

Is the cable modem attached to the PC via a network cable or via something like USB?

    Like This?

Cable Modem ===USB=== PC with Firewall ----Network---- Hub ----Network--- PC 2
