    Business Wire - October 29, 2003
CUPERTINO & SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct 29, 2003 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Symantec Corp. (Nasdaq:SYMC), and Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced the release of the enhanced iForce(TM) Intrusion Detection (IDS) Appliance, Powered by Sun and Symantec. A complete high-speed network intrusion detection appliance, the solution extends the network's defense against today's attacks, which can cause organizations significant damage and cost millions of dollars in lost revenue.

The iForce IDS Appliance is an advanced network IDS appliance that combines Symantec ManHunt 3.0 with the uncompromising Sun Fire V60x(TM) server running on a hardened version of the Solaris(TM) Operating System, x86 Platform Edition. The system provides flexible deployment options by monitoring up to 2 gigabits per second on copper- or fiber-based networks. "The iForce IDS Appliance demonstrates our commitment to providing an uncompromising, high-speed IDS appliance that protects critical information infrastructures," said Sandeep Kumar, director of product management at Symantec. "Symantec ManHunt also integrates with other Symantec Intrusion Protection solutions, which includes Symantec Host IDS and Symantec Decoy Server, to secure each layer of the network infrastructure."

"The Sun Fire V60x system, running on the Solaris OS x86 Platform Edition, provides enterprise-class security and availability to the iForce IDS Appliance," said Manish Bhuptani, senior director of Network Services Market Development at Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Working with Symantec, we can provide our joint customers with a pre-tested, configured appliance that helps them secure their network infrastructure at a low cost."

The iForce IDS Appliance offers other valuable capabilities and features that make it easy for customers to install and manage a complete integrated solution, including:

-- Ultra High Speed Intrusion Detection

-- A 1U intrusion protection solution that monitors network environments at speeds of up to 2 Gigabits per second, dependent on configuration.

    -- Comprehensive Intrusion Detection

-- Symantec ManHunt 3.0 software protects users from known and unknown (or "zero-day") attacks using its unique hybrid detection architecture, which combines protocol anomaly detection, signature detection, denial-of-service and scan detection, and IDS evasion detection to accurately and effectively identify attacks.

    -- Multi-Interface Monitoring

-- Provides multiple monitoring interfaces, even on the 100 Mbps model.

    -- Greater Performance

-- The new Sun Fire V60x server provides better performance.

-- Ease of Deployment and Management

-- Easy to deploy locally and remotely, the appliance can be shipped to a remote site and securely administrated through a centralized management console.

In addition, the iForce IDS Appliance is backed by Symantec Security Response, the world's leading Internet security response team. Symantec Security Response works around the clock to understand and research security threats, and provides security updates and the latest security context information including exploit and vulnerability information, event descriptions and event refinement tools.

    Availability and Support

The iForce IDS Appliance features seven models with varying bandwidth protection to address a wide range of enterprise requirements, starting at a suggested price of $12,500. All seven models -- 100Mbps, 200Mbps, 500Mbps, 1Gbps fiber, 2Gbps fiber, 1Gbps copper and 2Gbps copper are available and supported in North America through Arrow Electronics' MOCA division and sold to authorized resellers.
