Large stakes in the toolbar game

We all rant and rave about keeping boxes clean of spyware and all the other nasties that are out there. Many folks, inlcluding people within your own organization, typically see you as the little boy/girl who cries wolf all the time. Usually, your requests are ignored.

I have a friend who works for a very popular on-line lottery site (name not important) and he is my eyes and ears into the dirty game of spyware and data mining. If anyone at your organization thinks you are crying wolf, show them the information I'm about to share with you.

I asked my buddy about the amount of cash that is being kicked around and I was shocked when I saw his response. I will give you the unedited direct quote so you wont lose the shock value:

"The search bar we distribute here in our comapny generates 5-6MM a month with alomst 40% of that dropping to the bottom line. It's ****ing insane how this thing is blowing up."

Yes, these people are looking to whore you in any way they can.

This is just a little eye opener for those who don't know how much money is at stake and why these people go to such lengths to plant code on your machines. Be sure to show this to the dumdums who think that you are just another paranoid security person.

    wow! Very very interesting...

Do you think that includes the google toolbar? Even with the privacy options turned on?

I haven't seen any spyware show up on their product yet... unless you turn on the tracking features...

Damn.... That would almost cover my bar bill......

Can you pump him for a list of sites to block so we don't get his company's little "goldmine"?

They keep departments isolated from one another. I'm sure that the info we all want would be considered a corporate "asset", thus, leakage would be a crime.

He gave me a great visual by saying that they have a bunch of "Russian whizkids" arranged in a sweatshop configuration busting out product for them. These guys are more motivated to get U.S. citizenship rather than the bling they should be earning for the work they do. I think I'm in the wrong business.

    TheHorse13,

Maybe we should go into business together. "Horse and Mittens Casino Pimp Shop".

I agree. I'm beginning to wonder if I am in the wrong business.

As much as I hate spyware... damn.. they make lots of cash..

Ms. M: You're leaving out "Sharkie" there..... It would make the company name much more appropriate....... Hoss, Mittens & Sharkie - Casino Pimp Shop...... See, that has a much nicer "ring" to it.....

ROTF....Yes, I think that has a nice sound to it. After one year in business, we can all retire to the Keys and live life on a yacht.
