    GUI's

    what are some other GUI's for linux other than Gnome and KDE?
    tried searching google but came up with erroneous results

    There are quite a few...

    A good place to see screenshots of some of them with various themes is http://themes.freshmeat.net

    There is also a commercial version of CDE and X11 from Xi Graphics for Linux, FreeBSD, and x86 Solaris.

    blackbox and all his children fluxbox,matchbox,hackedbox,openbox... They are all very light and as you can see the box family is quite popular by the amount of children (blackbox for windows makes windows much nicer IMHO)
