OS that runs from CD???
Hey all, I'm going to be doing a steganography research paper for an Independent study at my University. I'd like to use a laptop, that was given to me, to experiment. I'm going to be using it mainly for testing, if I can get it working. Does anyone know any good OS's that run solely from a CD other than Devil Linux? Thanks

Knoppix does if I remember right. I'll do a search for the link and post it.
[edit]
LinuxISO.org download mirror: http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=44
Knoppix site: http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-old-en.html
It says the official site is closed because of software-patents... http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/
But it gives links to the one I posted.....index-old-en.html

There are lots of them at http://www.distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=cd and Diemos would shoot me if I didn't mention phlack.
Each of them, like normal Linux distro's have their pros and cons, try them and see what you like.

Knoppix is a great way to go in this case, just as a few others have mentioned. I've used it many of times both for work and for play. The best place to get it from is www.linuxiso.org....

Dang, I was going to post that link MicoBurn; great minds think alike. Anyways, I will just go ahead and agree with the group, Knoppix full force!

Thanks for the abundance of suggestions. I guess I better get more specific, I didn't expect there to be so many choices.
My goal:
Boot OS from cd, can't use HD b/c HD controller bad
Need to be able to surf net, will be buying Linux compatible PCMCIA NIC
Going to save to USB thumb drive or accross network if necessary
Thanks...
PS....Knoppix is on que

Knoppix will prolly suit you fine in this case.
I have not yet tried phlak (downloading now) so I don't now about it.
Knoppix will allow you to save data and config to the usb and is pretty good with the hardware reckonition.
Another choice could be to use puppy linux (http://www.goosee.com/puppy/)
flash-Puppy boots off a flash card (or any USB storage media) and live-Puppy is a live-CD, that is, Puppy boots directly from the CD just like Knoppix.
edit:
Yeah, that sucks.
The knoppix.net site is up and running tho

Well I'm downloading Phlak and Knoppix. Seems that either of those two should do the trick.
When I discovered the concept of booting OS from a CD was when someone in AO suggested http://www.devil-linux.org/. Unfortunately, that OS is mainly for network security. It explains how it is best used as on a computer at the front of a network with no HD. This concept seemed very interesting and I'm glad to hear that there has been so many advances and better distros since then. Does anyone run their OS off of a CD regularly???
Any input would help so I can hurdle some of the common probs, I run a distro of linux right now so that part of it shouldn't be an issue.
