Man gets "spam rage" over penis ad

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Call it spam rage: A Silicon Valley computer programmer has been arrested for threatening to torture and kill employees of the company he blames for bombarding his computer with Web ads promising to enlarge his penis.

In one of the first prosecutions of its kind in the state that made "road rage" famous, Charles Booher, 44, was arrested on Thursday and released on bail for making repeated threats to staff of a Canadian company between May and July.

Booher threatened to send a "package full of Anthrax spores" to the company, to "disable" an employee with a bullet and torture him with a power drill and ice pick; and to hunt down and castrate the employees unless they removed him from their e-mail list, prosecutors said.

He used return e-mail addresses including Satan@hell.org.

In a telephone interview with Reuters on Friday, Booher acknowledged that he had behaved badly but said his computer had been rendered almost unusable for about two months by a barrage of pop-up advertising and e-mail.

"Here's what happened: I go to their Web site and start complaining to them, would you please, please, please stop bothering me," he said. "It just sort of escalated ... and I sort of lost my cool at that point."

The Sunnyvale, California man now faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for next month on charges of threatening to injure someone. He said he did not own any guns or have access to anthrax.

Booher said the problem stemmed from a program he mistakenly downloaded from the Internet that brought a continuous stream of advertising to his computer.

The object of the Californian's anger was Douglas Mackay, president of DM Contact Management, which works for Albion Medical, a firm advertising the "Only Reliable, Medically Approved Penis Enhancement."

"This went for a long, long time. He seemed really dedicated to this," Mackay said from Victoria, British Columbia in Canada. "He seemed like a guy just crazy enough with nothing to lose that might actually do something."

He said his firm does not send spam but blamed a rival firm which he said routes much of their unsolicited bulk e-mail through Russia and eastern Europe. Mackay said such firms gave a bad name to the penis enhancement business.

In other cases, Internet vigilantes have bombarded spammers with both unsolicited e-mail and regular mail and phone calls, launched attacks on spammers' computers and posted spammers' personal information on the Internet, according to reports.

Separately, lawmakers in Washington said the U.S. House of Representatives was poised to vote for on a measure to outlaw most Internet spam. Lawmakers hope to pass a national anti-spam bill before a much tougher California state law goes into effect on January 1.

Before I get done with Mackay, I will give a "bad name" to "serial killer"
It shouldn't be illegal to kill a spammer.
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

What has just horrified me is that I no longer get too worried about this sort of thing? It's kind of like I expect it..................that is worrying?

I will not go for the "kill all spammers" lobby.......................my ploy is:

I bought the product that you advertised, my wife and cats have fled the home, and I tripped up getting out of the shower this morning, and can no longer work.........please send $20 million to my lawyers at ********************* and we can settle this out of court?

You guys will be in Fulsom or Joliet or wherever...................I shall send you a postcard from the Bahamas

I think that the guy over-reacted slightly?

    Just my slant on things

I kind of lean toward the vigilante lobby, here, though I'd like to find more creative ways than murder, rape and pillage to end the SPAM sources.

There are blacklists (that are marginally effective). But that doesn't track down the spammer. I think it might be possible, with an organization like this, to network internationally and track down SPAM sources and--using white hat methods--identify the systems and close them down.

We could set up an off-shore account in the Caymans where clients could deposit "donations" to cover costs.

BTW nihil: Thats Folsom (As in: "I hear the train a'comin' ..."). Fullsome is an adjective used in describing a righteous rack.

My question is, why is there so much spam about penis enlargement in some form or another???

Ah............."I shot a spammer in Reno, just to watch him die.........." JC

Righteous rack?...........Dolly Parton? or a "schitzophrenic lady whose twin personalities I both adore?"

OK on a serious note, has anyone any opinions/experience on using filters to keep that stuff out?..........like "penis", "money", "earn", "cash", "opportunity", "loan" and so on?

Also, these things never seem to be directly addressed to you? so if you block that which is not addressed to your exact e-mail addy?

In the past I have had AOL (paid for) and free (Hotmail) e-mail accounts. Both were spam magnets so I ditched them. I now use relatively exotic accounts, and do not have a problem at all....like maybe 5 in a month on 56.6 AND ADSL accounts together.........I have only had the ADSL since April, and have actually had zero hits! Oh, by the way, both accounts are free

My virus analysis account seems to have been closed by the provider............guess that they did not like what I was doing on their servers? Well, I suppose my links to Ho Chi Minh City are slightly tenuous? I shall have to find another deserving host, it would seem.

Please do not get me wrong, I am careful, and never let anything loose..........but if I had....I would like it to happen somewhere deserving?

    Cheer folks

    Good week-end

Because all men are insecure. The entire Vietnam war was fought over who had the biggest dick.

They even dropped huge oversized condoms over North Vietnam to scare the communists, hoping they would believe that western men had bigger penises.

I don't get spam mail. I am quite proud of it. Never post your email in a webpage or newsgroup. When you send your email over public lines, always add a -NOSPAM- tag or something like it to confuse harvesters. I even use it in the 'reply to' field and add a line to my signature to remind people the reply button doesn't work with me, and that I don't recieve automated rplies lake vacation reminders. I use a spam bucket at a hotmail account for all online registrations. That's where all of the spam goes. My mail is also forwarded through a forwarder whose sole purpose is to filter spam.

It's to the point of obsession, I agree. But it works.
