    free bsd 5.3

    welll i am having trouble with installation of free bsd 5.3
    here is the error
    "unable o write data ad0"
    "vty1 dma limited to udma33"1
    "ad0:failure-read _dma timed out non ata66 cable or device "
    so plz help me out

    r u installing over the network? what is your setup like?

    no i kinda havea cd of 5.3 which i downloaded form the net. and made some bootable floppiesand now the error

    hmmm.... How did you set your partitions? Did the OS install with errors or did it not install at all? and are running dual harddrives or are you dual booting with more than one OS and if So which and show the partition space for each or if there is one?
    also if it is farely new and your PC isnot the error just may be something that is uncampatible.
    I also found this hopefully it may help you i only slightly understand or i would help you there sorry about that one.

    2 possibilities:

    1) "old" harddrive (ata33) using an 80pin IDE cable on a >ata66 controller.
    2) "new" harddrive (>ata66) using an "old" 40pin cable on a >ata66 controller.

    I think it's probably option 2.

    Most modern mainboards have a ata100 or ata133 IDE controller. These are backwards compatible with "older" harddisks but you have to match the cable and the drive.

    Which types of harddisk and mainboard are you using?

    no it did not install at all ,it went on to copy the files but it failed

    yes at first i was , then when it did not install i removed the secondry hard disk and tried with the one which was original,

    no i formatted my whole hdd , i want to move to free bsd fully

    no i kinda brough it in 1999 amd k6 , but the hard disk is kinda new seagate 40 gb,well i don get what is uncompatable , i recently upgraded the ram to 264,which is the maximum the motherboard can take ..

    i think you are right . iam using a seagate 40gb hdd with a mercury MO
    well that's all .
