I am actually godfather to one of my nieces due to a "proxy" (my Father) standing in for me....I was overseas at the time

When it comes to the Internet, a proxy server is the machine that deals with your connection, along with that of many others. So, when you connect, you connect to this machine, and it handles the rest of the net connection. This allows for resource management and balancing of usage.

I happen to know that saintakaagni is a new member, and would probably not know the origins of the term "proxy". I know this because he has told me, and also that English is not his mother tongue.

He might find the little bit of slightly irrelevant and jokingly presented (but absolutely correct) in formation useful?

If there are 25 guys in a class and they all provide the answers that the teacher gave them except for one who gives that extra little bit..............the teach will give him the A++ and mark the others down from him.

Sometimes a knowledge of history and semantics may give the impression that you have "read around" your subject, instead of .

Adding to the proxy qn........ so wht exactly is the proxy setting in internet options with windows OS.....(can be accessed from internet explorer under tools-internetoptions-connection-settings-proxy)

on my default connection(dial up) setting......i have under advanced proxy setting like this........

Type :HTTP
Proxy address to use :localhost
port :8080

Here i am not connecting to any external proxy server....and it pointing to local host......so wht is this setting and wht is the advantage of this...........

In your case, one of the following things is possible:
1) You or someone else installed a proxy server on your computer. Some ad blockers do this as well.
2) Someone has compromised your machine and it's acting as a public proxy whenever it's on the net (unlikely, since you have a dynamic IP address).
3) Spyware!!!

I tried to disable the proxy setting couple of times..........but once i connect back to the internet.....those settings are enabled agin........
As listed in ur possiblities.............i do have a pop up blocker with my dialer..........so that could be the culprit.....

You should still check for spyware. Also look for documentation on your popup blocker and check that it actually does route you through localhost:8080. Also, you might want to update the blocker to its latest version, or better yet get one that does not use the proxy method. This is because an intelligent cracker might be able to use you as a public proxy for attacks.
