    Post Many programs in RAM

a couple days ago i was browsing around ebay looking for cheap computer parts (im trying to build my own) and i came upon this ... is this for real, or are they just trying to sell you a trojan and/or virus and spyware? heres the main text

INCREASE YOUR COMPUTERS SPEED BY UP TO 500%!

This will truly increase your PC's speed.
No gimmick, no tricks, nothing else to buy!

    Fact:

Most PCs that have been in operation for as little as 3 months
begin to get sluggish when opening programs and displaying
graphics. Many are especially prone to "freeze-ups" and
Windows error messages, causing the user to reboot and/or
even power down just to get back in action.

    Ever wonder why this happens?

The most common causes are NOT insufficient RAM memory,
as nearly any PC tech will try to convince you. Here's the truth
about this mystery that plagues nearly every PC user:

Most every time you install a new program, whether it be a
game, word processor, camera/scanner/photo software or
other utility program, AND especially an Internet downloaded
program, that program installs itself in startup, which causes the
program to run in resident memory (RAM) all the time, whether
you are using it or not! This sneaky and completely unnecessary
method that the software programmers use causes to be used
up your valuable RAM memory resources, by having their
software running all the time. Imagine when you have 10, 20,
30 or even 50 of these programs running at the same time. It's
no wonder that the average PC chokes and freezes up!

That figure of 50 programs running in RAM is NOT an
exaggeration either, I have seen it over and over in the last
few years on the PCs that I have taken in to "fix". What's
even worse, is that most programs also install Spyware, Adware
and Trojan Horse viruses, Worms and Cookies behind the
scene. These programs are also running in the background!
And those are an entirely different, serious problem!
And now, many BRAND NEW computers now come with this
crap already loaded and running, right out of the box!

Loss of RAM memory causes programs to open and operate
extremely slow, and eventually causes Windows to "starve"
and freeze up or shut down, due to a lack of enough RAM to
even operate itself. It's not RAM you need. You need to put a
stop to those unwanted programs from eating what you have up!

Put a stop to those nasty Startup, Adware,
Spyware programs & Viruses, and prevent
them from installing every time they try.
Simply run this software, and it will
    continuously monitor the activity on
your PC and even warn you if you wish
    of unauthorized attempts.

Recover all of your precious RAM memory,
and use it for the programs you are using right now!

Works with Windows 95 thru XP, installs in just a minute
and is very easily configured. This program alerts you
when programs are trying to install into startup, and
gives you the option to decide yes or no. You can also
easily disable any program already running in memory
and make sure it does not start up again by itself.
*Stop unwanted Spyware, Adware & Worms*
All commands are fully reversible allowing for safe use
by anyone. No detailed PC knowledge required!

The interface for this program is intuitive and easily mastered,
and displays information about programs that you do not
recognize, thereby helping you decide whether to stop
them or allow them to run. None of your needed software
will ever be deleted. It can simply be stopped from running
all the time and only run when you want it.

it seems a little odd to me... anybody have any thoughts on this one?

\"Look, Doc, I spent last Tuesday watching fibers on my carpet. And the whole time I was watching my carpet, I was worrying that I, I might vomit. And the whole time, I was thinking, \"I\'m a grown man. I should know what goes on my head.\" And the more I thought about it... the more I realized that I should just blow my brains out and end it all. But then I thought, well, if I thought more about blowing my brains out... I start worrying about what that was going to do to my goddamn carpet. Okay, so, ah-he, that was a GOOD day, Doc. And, and I just want you to give me some pills and let me get on with my life. \" -Roy Waller

    Yes mate!

    scam,scam,scam,scam.......................

RAM Idle Pro, RAMBooster are a couple of free memory managers. You should not really need them with a modern box and 256Mb+ of memory. I find the analysis capabilities useful to find contentions, memory leaks and the like.

Plenty of freeware around that lets you check and manage your start up files.

    http://www.winpatrol.com
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/index.html "Hijack This"....look in the tools bit, and it will give you a log of what is starting

    Derrrrrrrrrrrr:

"and displays information about programs that you do not
recognize, thereby helping you decide whether to stop
them or allow them to run."

    I don't think so

As I said: scam, scam, scam

I find this a highly dubious claim. "Most every time", I assume is American for "Almost everyt time" - implying that most (which I'll take as being "over half") programs install themselves in the startup.

Whilst it is certainly true that some programs do install stuff into the startup, I would certainly not think that "Most every time" applied here. Also, some of these things do useful stuff.

I certainly have yet to find a game which does this. I also don't see why most programs need to.

This message is an exaggeration, at minimum.

Also it doesn't mention that there are numerous utilities for controlling startup programs already. They are just trying to sell you their dodgy s/w, which probably does nothing against worms / viruses / spyware anyway

BTW, the thing that causes most computers to slow down and crash after a while of running is memory leaks. I've found a nice program called FreeRAMXP that will clear most of these up. It's freeware, and if you ask nicely, I might even provide you with a link.

Also, if spyware were your problem, I use Spybot to clear this up. In my opinion, it works better than Lavasoft Adaware. Here's the link for Spybot:

    http://spybot-spyware.com/

You can also stop programs running at startup with msconfig.exe

somebody trying to sell us the msconfig program that comes with Windows.

Nihil, Spybot also doesn't like adaware's backup folder.

    Sweetlissa,

I recommend using both, as they both find different things, and are updated independently. At any point in time you will get different results.

Ad-Aware will have problems with the later SpyBots, as it seees the Registry instructions to prevent browser hijacks etc. I think it is the last two if the three extra measures that it detects, just don't let it delete them

What a way to sell a product! Playing on jargons just to confuse the user. If I don't know any better, I migh take a look at it.
