I don't understand, you see tons of lines when you start X? What Windows Manager are you using? Are you sure you have the right monitor in the config?

I had issues with Mandrake also, but instead of bunches of wavy lines, the screen flickered.. (I did find out why, but never bothered to fix it)

What I needed at the time was a troubleshooting guide to help me get from text login, to editing the correct files, and I was never able to find one exactly. What I did find was a lot of bulletin board postings that stated "this is what's wrong, do x, y, and z, and it's fixed"

I needed something that said something along the lines of "ok, first you log in, then you type XXXXX to open your editor, then you type xxxxx to open this file in the editor, then you do xyz to save it, etc." Or in other words, something that holds your hand a little. I went through several flavors before I got one to work... but I have several others that I would like to try. I haven't been able to get Mandrake or Gentoo working, but I'll work with what I have, and eventually I'll figure it out.

Does anybody have any favorite "handholding" sites? Even the newbie type sites seem to assume some knowledge.

Not that these are necessarily any more helpful, but at least they will give you somewhere to look until someone who knows how has a chance to respond.
