Bad blocks

I have a big problem on my hands and I am stumped. I am running my personal computer with WinXP Pro and have 2 hard drives. Windows has detected bad blocks on my second hard drive (its a data drive not for the os) so it disabled the drive and now i cant get it back online to do anything to it. Its a 200gb WD drive and stupid me didn't make it into several small partitions. I used the diag tools WD sent me but that didn't do much. So i was wondering if there is any way i can remove, fix, or write zeros to or anything to fix the bad block(s). I thank you all in advance in any effort or any suggestions you can give me, i have searched google and Microsoft but I always come up with stuff for UNIX and Linux or tools like fsck.

Have you run the Western digital repair tool?

Can you see it in device manager and is it OK?

Can you see it in BIOS?

The WD tool may not work if it cannot "see" the drive, but there should not be any reason why you cannot use the drive with bad blocks unless they are the critical ones at the beginning.

Post the event viewer info please.

I am hoping that what you saw was not its "death rattle"

I ran the tests that WD gave me and it said it could not be repaired error code 0226 and to contact WD support (which i am about to do).

I can see it in BIOS and the WD diagnostic tools did see it also.

And a bit of info that might help, for about a week before this happened I was hearing a strange sound from ym PC but could not find it, I ran tests and picked up nothing so i ignored it. It kinda sounded like a charge up and a charge down sound.

I bought it at the beginning on 2003 and it was a 3 year warrenty so yes it is, but I also need the information on the drive so i am willing do to anything in my power to save it.

If you have a FAT32 partition you could use spinrite.. search google for spinrite5.zip

another good app (which will work on ntfs) is "hddregenerator" search google for that too

OK.

I have only ever had a problem once with a WD drive.............If you get that kind of message you will get an RTB (return to base) instruction and a new drive.

You might look for "Unstoppable Copier" by roadkil, It might let you recover your data. Problem would be that as you have a single partition you might need an equal sized drive?

Well you guys did help in a big way but i don't know if i am making progress. I got the hddregenerator and ran that, it found 1 back sector and repaired it but windows still wont enable the drive. So I decided to run the WD diag tools again, they said it had no errors, but after that message it said "error/status code: 0000" so i don't think that means anything but if there are no errors why wont windows read it? When I boot up and look in my event viewer it says this:

So I loaded up WD diag/install tools and made a backup copy of the partition table thing (lol) and replaced it with a supposedly repaired new one and windows still wont read the drive, could i try putting the HD in my win98 machine to see if i can at least get some info off it? or what?

Now in the Computer Management/Disk Management it says that the WD is a Dynamic Disk, and its offline, I right click on it and it gives me an option to reactivate it but then it gives me this error:

The good news is, I found some older backup copies of some of the more important stuff!!! i forgot i had. Thanks again for all the help you have given me!
