Even if Cybr1d does block half the stuff off the internet he may have no customers but it is still his right to block whatever he wants to on HIS computers. If ppl don't like it they can go somewhere else and that's his loss but he hasn't violated anyone's rights.

Same with your school, they can do whatever they want with their stuff, if you don't like it go find a school that doesn't censor anything (good luck lol).

Not trying to turn this into a flame war, But I do have a question. Are u actually telling me that the congress is dealing with cencorship on school's PCs? As for turning off certain services, I must do so, to keep my cybercafe as legal as possible. If I do not block certain processes, then my store could easily become a hacker's honeypot and thats bad for business. Also, I have to monitor programs that users try to use, or install and I cannot allow them to visit porn websites. As stupid as that may sound, some people cannot resist the urge and check those sites out on public PCs. The cybercafe is mainly going to deal with PC games, Office tools and many other services that users might need such as programming and development.

Rwarren, could you please post for me the websites that your school is cencoring out, or the services for that matter *such as AIM and MSN IM*. I'm afraid you might be wrong with mixing the services allowed by your school with the first amendment. Would you consider the fact that you cannot Preach about religion in a school a violation of the first amendment? Would you also consider the fact that you cannot say whatever you want to your teacher, without suffering consenguences? I dont like to get into politics...so i'll leave it at that.

    Cheers,

All Internet access is subject to monitoring by somebody, no matter where you are. So be carful in the steps taken to acheive the results that you are looking for.
    My 2ยข worth I guess.

this argument of the first amendment being violated as already been argued in congress.
Cybr1d & Scenicblur are both correct. I suggest you ask your teacher what free speech is really about.

Here's an old joke about free speech. When the judge sentences you to 30 days community service for being a twit, tell him to bugger off. The next police officer that writes you a speeding ticket, tell him to go hump a festering whore....

I dunno...here's a wacky idea...spend more time learning what your school is trying to teach you. It is painfully obvious that you have no clue.... there are a couple good threads here about free speech...read them.

I think you're very confused and lost child
    I couldn't agree more..

I am wondering about the possible legal implications of all this?

Over here in the UK when someone under the age of 18 goes to school the school is acting "in loco parenti" Which means that they take over the rights and duties of the parents.

I have read in the US of parents being sued for the actions of their children. So is it that schools are worried about potential legal comebacks if one of their students causes harm on the net, using school provided equipment? [apart from the obvious security implications of uncontrolled systems]

Also if a student hacks someone and causes damage, won't the FBI and the Secret Service come round and impound all the school's equipment whilst they search for evidence...........that would be rather inconvenient I would have thought, and highly disruptive to teachers and students?

Lastly, and I don't know how your education is funded, if the school gets grants, scholarships and prizes from prominent people and businesses? This could be witheld if there was a serious hacking incident?

I do not think that the issue is "censorship" as I do not see any violation of freedom of speech. It all seems to be security related, firstly of the valuable IT resources that are provided primarily for educational purposes, and perhaps secondly of the academic reputation and financial well being of the school.

    Just a few thoughts

Censorship always defeats its own purpose, for it creates, in the end, the kind of society that is incapable of exercising real discretion.... in the long run it will create a generation incapable of apprecioting the difference between independence of thought and subservience....

thank you nihil, you brought me to another point. our school/agoncey is fedrely funded. whitch means that the equipment does not belong the the school, however it does belong to the fedral and state governemt. and by the Child Internet Pretection ACT it is stated that all fedraly funded agonceys must have a pornogrophy filtering system set in place. it does not state however that further action should be tacken.
