    .A virii: What Language is it Written in?

    Hi! This is a basic question but I can't find the answer anywhere: What language is a virus that ends in ".a" written in? Assembly? I'm curious because when I visit the antivirus sites and see what's out there, I often see virii that end with ".a". I thought it may be assembly but I thought the assembly/win32 assembly stuff was pretty much over. Thanks!

    You mean like: w32.klez.a ?

    in this case the "a" is just like the version number of your browser..

    it is a part of the AV companies classification..

    W32 = Win 32bit platform
    @mm = mass mailer
    roughly speaking..

    normaly if you read the technical info on the virii the info of how it was written and "packed" is listed.. ie:
    It is written in the Microsoft Visual C++ 6 programming language and is compressed with UPX v0.76.1-1.22.
    cheers

    Don't you mean version number (or variant) of the virus?

    Cheers,

    EDIT: I didn't read the "like" in your post so it read "in this case the a is the version number of your browser"

    Just shoot me.. It is confusing what I had said.. I should have used a better example.. like Software version ie V2.3.4 as in a version Of Nero.. v5.5.10

    so as varients of a virii come out you will have.. the original whih is renamed to dot a.. when the b version is identified..
    as in ms blaster.. msblaster, msblaster.b etc..

    is that better?

    cheers
