motherboard lemon or winner?
I went out and bought a motherboard. I still have the receipt and can return it if it's a lemon. Can anyone give me some comments on this motherboard cpu combo.
Intel northwood 2.4Ghz 400 FSB P4
and
shuttle AV49VN

I wanted a little room for upgrading to 3ghz later but I didn't want to pay anotehr $20 for a motherboard with a 800FSB. Is this a good motherboard or did I get a rock gut brand?

If you baught this today, it's not a lemon but not very good.
1) No 800 MHz FSB for a P4 is not good... I think Intel only procuted one processor that is 533 MHz
2) ATA133 Suck! The best technology for hard drive is S-ATA and not ATA133.
The rest look fine. Build in Audio is usually fine for normal people.

Hi,
Looks "reasonable" on the face of it.
You will notice that it only supports one strip of PC400 memory.............you will have to go for slower memory if you want 3GB...........also you will need 1GB strips..........$$$$$$$$$$......why do you see the need for 3GB?
You do not say what the main purpose of the box is..............that would be useful?..........if you are building a server, SOHO, you might want RAID 0 or 1?
It will support a P4/2.4.........................there are faster processors? but do you really need one?
It DOES NOT have onboard video..................that is good IMHO
ATA133 Suck! The best technology for hard drive is S-ATA and not ATA133
Yes, but it is a question of balance? The rest of the specs don't really merit S-ATA?
Just my thoughts
It really depends what you want to use it for?

Hard Drive is the slowest part of computer. Any technology that raise this part to higher level raise the bottleneck of the computer a bit higher.
