Post Poll- Snort on *nix or Windows?

I'm interested in determining what the majority is in terms of host OS for Snort.

Do you run Snort on Windows?

Do you run Snort on Unix?

Do you run Snort on Linux?

Thanks in advance for participating in this little poll/study. I'm just curious as to what the majority is...

    Cheers,

I can only vote once, so I put mine in here.

    Both linux and windows.
Quitmzilla is a firefox extension that gives you stats on how long you have quit smoking, how much money you\'ve saved, how much you haven\'t smoked and recent milestones. Very helpful for people who quit smoking and used to smoke at their computers... Helps out with the urges.

Yah I can only vote once so I'll put mine in here too.

Unix (Solaris 8 and 9) and Windows 2000.

If you have the ability I would say run it in a native *nix, it just makes life a LOT easier. If you do have to run it in a Windows environment I would recommend that you look to someone like www.engagesecurity.com which is a French/Swiss group that has done some nice stuff for Snort in a 2k environment.

Give a man a match and he will be warm for a while, light him on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed thus far...

Since most of you have indicated you would like the chance to vote for more than one option, can an admin plz edit the poll to allow for this? I appreciate it!

Interesting that Windows and Linux are currently tied w/ 4 votes each.

Linux and XP, although the XP version I have will run out of memory requiring a reboot once in a while.

I can't edit the poll so that people can vote for more than one option. In stead, I added another option ("Both windows and *nix"). Hope this helps.

I have it running on XP, btw

    re: poll modification

    Thanks Negative...mucho appreciatto.

For the record, I'm curious as to what host OS people choose for Snort because I'm investigating possible IDS evasion techniques. There is a wealth of information floating around, but I'm specifically interested in 'target saturation' techniques.

Meaning, attacking the IDS system itself. To better understand possible/theoretical approaches before moving into my laboratory, I wanted to see what the most common host for Snort is/was/etc...

Thanks again to all who participate!
