Your approach should be :
set the password to some known value and dump the file
set the password to a different known value and dump the file
Change no other data which are stored in this file. Then compare the files with one another using a binary diff tool.
Of course it's possible that the entire file is encrypted using a key derived from the password. More likely however, the encryption key itself is stored somewhere encrypted using some other key which is itself derived from the password - thus enabling you to change the password without it having to rewrite the entire file.
On a slightly different note, does the TALLY company not publish blueprints of its file format? If not, how do you know it is secure?
It could be xor'd with a fixed value for all you know

Errrr, why do you want to know?
If it's a legit reason, why not just ask TALLY the question.
If it's not then I doubt you'll get want you want here.

This thread is 3 years old. If something hasn't been answered within 6 months it is safe to assume that the original poster has found a solution.
In this case he wouldn't get an answer because TALLY is an Indian software house and most of us would have never seen it. He should have asked his question on an Indian support forum where their packages are very popular.
