zero byte file, name is aaaaaaaaa...

This appeared on my desktop this morning:

    - zero byte file

    - name is all a's (202 of them)(aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa)

    - does not appear from a command line directory listing

    - does not appear with attrib command

    - no creation, modification, or accessed dates

    - not compressed, not encrypted

    Any ideas?

Does it have an extension? I know that Kaaza Lite Ressurection will put a file on the desktop with strange names..do you use that program by any chance?

I know for a fact that PGP does that when it in the process of wiping a file. Are you sure this file just randomly showed up? The file could be the result of starting a wipe and then before it could finish, canceling or ending it unintentionally via shutting down your computer or something of that nature. Although the P2P networks use temporary file names to store data when you are downloading, I find it unlikely that they would generate a temporary file name with hundreds of a's.
I suggest simply deleting the file.

    Two other possibilities?

    1. Today is April1st..........a traditional time for practical jokes in some communities?

    2. Some sort of failed buffer overflow attempt?

    Just my immediate thoughts

    Cheers

Sounds more like someone holding down the a key for about 30 seconds.
Now my cat has been taking lessons from nilis virus writing cat, but he lifts cetain keys clear off the keyboard. Last night he lifted the 'J' key and I had to search all over for it.

My cat LOVES the keyboard too... she dont steal keys, but collects things from the house to deposit on it. (cat toys, etc) once she dug out a container of honey mustard from the trash, got the lid off, and deposited it on the KB. sigh, had to put it thru the dishwasher, which incidently, as long as the proper time to dry is given is a good way to clean it
