    2 simple questions about crackers

#1. Do most crackers use dos, linux or unix (or something unmentioned) when they are cracking a server or a computer?

#2. I have recently read an article in the recent wired (dont ask me which one though) about a guy who hacks into servers and other computer systems using only a browser. How is this possible? And if you can do it using just a broswer, than why arent so many crackers hacking using it?

Depends what u like. There's nothin one OS can do that another can't....

bugs are found everyday, and they are used to enter systems, crash systems or whatever .....

Most "crackers" use whatever operatting system is appealling to them. It's been talk about a hell of a lot around here about what Operating System is the securist, what is best for this, what is best for that, blah, blah, blah. If you can use it, and can use it well, know your way around, and know how to do whatever you're doing, be it coding, web development, image design, whatever, then use it. No use going to an OS you don't know, when you can do it fine on one that you know how to.

Second, you can only do so much with a browser. Was he using his browser, or other peoples? For example, was he getting a dir listing due to old IIS, PHP or Apache expliots? Or was he explioting a flaw in the browser itself? Those are two possible ways to "crack: using your browser, and are prime examples of why you should always have everything on your system up to date, from servers like Apache, modules like for them like PHP, and even your web browsers.

    Peace

Basicly a script kiddie, or "hacker" that does things illigally, and destroys them, or uses them for their of personal gains.

    Basicly an idiot.

quick search on google, second page from the results....

    Definition for: cracker

A person who breaks into computer systems, using them without
authorization, either maliciously or to just to show off.
The news media commonly use the term "hacker" to describe someone who fits the above description, and this is unfortunate because it is inaccurate and misleading. Most people in the computer industry refer to "hacking" as the process of problem solving. You "hack" a solution, hence the label "hacker".

    Definition for: hacker
One who is knowledgeable about computers and creative in computer programming, usually implying the ability to program in assembly language or low-level languages.A hacker can mean an expert programmer who finds special tricks for getting around obstacles and stretching the limits of a system.
To some people it means an unconventional programmer or one who is not formally trained, or one who jerry-rigs programs (making temporary fixes that are not well-done).
At MIT, a "hack" means a practical joke, especially one that requires intelligence and technological skill to carry out.
The two terms are related in that a good cracker is one who uses his or her ingenuity to solve the puzzle that is computer security. Some crackers attack systems in a friendly and helpful way to show the owners that their security is lacking. This is probably a good thing in the case of commercial sites and vendors of firewall products.
