No. Without them, you, me, and everyone here would not only not be at this web site, but have no jobs.

Now as cute as it is seeing everyone rush off to say what each term means...Super.

Hacker: Someone who enjoys exploration and finding ways to make things happen that are supposedly impossible. Yes they can break into a server, because if none broke into anything, how would they understand how it happened exactly?

Cracker: Crack software to make it so people can get it for free, as most hackers believe information should be free, and not everyone has $20,000.00 for a peice of software they need. Richard Stallman was one of the first to keep this idea of software being shared alive. Everyone calls him a hero, but if you crack software, even with actual skill, you are a criminal to most.

I think that's ****. If you're smart enough to learn how to do it, then I don't think you should be jailed for doing it for yourself.

    Black Hat:

Have real skill like Regular hackers, but they use it for other purposes. They break into things and destroy things. Another group misunderstood. Who says they aren't the ones keeping other powers in countries from taking over and turning everyone into sheep?

A Black Hat breaks security for their own purposes, while White Hats Break in to see how it works.

    Red Hat:

Sell out company. Used to be cool in making *NIX OSs easier to use. Got greedy and said the hell with the none paying user base, and now only sell corporate ****.

Blue Hat: Hacker/Phreaker/Social Engineer like person. Likes to explore and learn how things work, even if some of the things learned would make them criminals if used. Morals separate them from criminals. Blue Hats know HOW to do things that could mess you up, but don't usually use any skills from it to do harm.

Blue Hats know a little of everything from Social Engineering, to phreaking, to hacking, to being damned creative. I am a Blue Hat. And I just made that whole thing up.

Whackers: Mythical. Break into anything they can and destroy as much as possible. Make Black Hats seem like innocent school children. They are electronic terrorists.

    Warez dudes:

    Free software fest!!!!

    MP3 dudes:

RIAA attacks them, because even though downloading music is the equivilant of copying a song on the radio to see if you like it, they whine because they may have to someday sell off one of their 300 BMWs.

    Sneak:

    Hired Hacker.

Business people will pay hackers to try and get in. And if you sit their saying how you shouldn't break into things, well, have fun being a broke ass. Who said it was wrong to know how? Blue Hat people are ideal, as they have morals and skill

Gore - You missed out white hats :P

    [rant on]
Personally, I don't have a problem with crackers (i.e. the free software types) as long as they pay for software, (i.e. compilers that have been used for monetary gain, etc) as soon as they can (most people can't get the capital needed to shell out for a huge piece of software before selling any of it).

But, just to be devils advocate, if the software was being made freely to everyone, how would they make profit out of it? Think of the resources put into development, and then think how would they make profit, if it were legally available to everyone, as simply as by lending your mate a cd? In a way, it's comparable to slave children in africa, who make something of decent quality, and they then see minimal profit on it...

    [/rant off]

As for the original question, very few people will use 'real' DOS nowadays, because it has somewhat limited capabilities... for example not being able to multitask, and having somewhat limited networking abilities.

I would say (in my opinion) most of the hacks that you hear about on CNN/BBC would be using *nix, because of the large array of scripts and tools available for it, hence they would be able to do something noteworthy... most viruses would be written using windows, as most viruses are for windows, and it would be easier to test them that way (hehe, just imagine virusing your own PC, so you can't get the virus executable, while trying to test it). Then there'd be a limited amount that uses windows, because it's the family PC, or the one down at the cyber cafe.

    On purpose too.

Wow, I guess they would actually have to support it? Darn! LOL. Same way ALL Free Software makes money. Support.

Actually, DOS 2000 is Multi User, and has networking features. I think IBM makes it.

I doubt that. I know a few virii writers, and they do not use Windows at all. They don't want to get infected

    what about gray hats

The gray hat became the ambiguous icon of hacktivism, the sometimes questionable practice of non-malicious probing of computers and networks for vulnerabilitiesm for entertainment, occasional fame, or notoriety.

that a very nice article too...

    Yup that is that.

I don't know the guys at 29A too well, but I have a feeling they either dual boot or are confident enough in their coding abilities (they are geniuses) that it needs not be tested.

Can you crack with a gray hat on ? I think it is lots of fun to do this stuff. See the protection schemes work and all that.

Cracker - A dumb white guy, a old person who once enjoyed playing with mainframes back in the 70s but now has moved on to things like encryption, or a guy or gal who has the same additude I have half the time only they need to perform various PC acts to prove it.
