where to look for open ports?
i just installed irc here in my office pc but it wont connect in to a server. I believe it has to have an open port in order to connect. How would i know which port is open?

You need 6667 open to use IRC, well not really you can use others that is just the default port.
What I would recommend is that you just go to the site of the server that you want to go to and see if they have a Java Applet. Most sites do, just use that while at work

try the http/https proxy.
it could work but will disconnect if you're not sending something.
however..may be net admin doesn't like irc. ???

Why would any Policy maker allow a admin or system operators authorization to d*ck the day away using IRC? It's just bad policy(IMHO) , a good sign of a non mature IS policy being implemented. ... "You are fired, you minute-hoarding clock watcher!"

Are you meant to use IRC in your office? I believe you've asked this question before in here and the answer is: Check with your system admin, if he wants to allow you using IRC. It might be blocked for particular reasons such as avoiding uncesserary risks to the office network.
You'd need access to the firewall to open the port anyways.

No, the client doesnt. However, the firewall must allow outgoing 6667.
