Does anyone know a free virus protection program?
I just hooked up a computer that my dad got from his work. There was a few problems with it and the guy that used it at his work was a moron when it came to using computers. I was wondering if any one knew of a free program that would scan the computer for any problems like viruses or adware/ spyware. I dont really want to go out and buy the software for a computer that i got for free that isnt even that close to top of the line....

For ad/spy ware use SpyBot Search & Destroy (Use this AS WELL as AdAware)
If you can get onto the internet, run "Housecall" from Trend Micro..................that will give you a good start. Another useful one can be found on the Panda Software site.
e-Trust EZArmour is free at least until the end of the year and is pretty good.
If you cannot do someone any good: don't do them any harm....
As long as you did this to one of these, the least of my little ones............you did it unto Me.

Hi swizeguy.. welcome to AO..
you say the box is old.. is it running win98 on a fat32 partition ?
If so, you can use f-prot for dos.. it's free..
here's a link to a page that lists some free scanners..
I think AVG is good but I also think that having more than one AV is better.
If windows happens to get blown away so bad you can't get it to start and that reason happens to be due to a windows based virus.. then f-prot might save you..
Like mentioned above.. adaware, spybot are great tools and I'd have to add hijackthis to the toolbox as well.. it's great for getting rid of browser hijackers as well as identifying spyware and even trojans that aren't picked up by adaware, spybot or even an av scanner.
I good trojan scanner (or two or three) should also be in in your toolbox.
AČ (a-squared) is one.. (me shouts out to groovicus, as he pm'd me about this)
Swatit is another.. there's even a somewhat obscure one known as ewido security suite.
as for the stuff that was mentioned above (without links).. just search google

Hi, I use Avast, so far I think its great. I used to use AVG, I used it for nearly 3 years, but latley updating has been a problem. The files were either corrupt, or the site was having problems.
I have been using Avast for about 2 months now, updating is automatic.
I use Adware which I think is great!
