Oh gawd do I agree, I recently helped out a co-worker's home machine. AV Defs were 49 months old. They told me over the phone before I went to their house, "oh ya we got AV". Even with the "you defs are outdated, you should update now" pop-ups, some people just don't get it.

Lets face it, not everyone that walks into a computer shop has 10, 15 + years of experience behind them. A little 'hand-holding' is in order for these people. You know the type, the guy that wants a computer because his buddy's got one and say's the games are fun , or Mom & Pop come in because little Johnny is starting Jr. High School and they think it would be a good idea if little Johnny had a computer to do his homework. These are the one's that usually bring there computer back a month later an say "Hmmm...seems to be broken, can you fix it?"

I think it is. For example lets take my mother.

She bought a computer. With preinstalled antivirus(norton AV)

I get her to update it when she bought it and told her to do so
on a regular basis. 2 weeks ago I had to send E-mail on that pc because
I was had mine open with all the part out of it on my desk.

Upon starting it I expect it to check my e-mail wich I was collecting at the
moment. Guess wat it didn't filter 8 e-mails with viruses I knew yahoo had filtered out
so I check the AV, guess wat last updated 12 months ago.

The problem is my mother doesn't care, "i have nothing of value, if i get a virus you
can fix it up." And if i try to tell here about zombies and her spreading virii to others
she simply say's "well im not online that much anyway, talking about that you should get
out more."

Changing the subject. She doesn't want to know or learn about virii and protection
it's scary in a way, and to "new" and "complicated". I'm afraid this count's for a lot of people not only my mom.

I'm only afraid of virii that are smart enough to change themselfs as the situation changes. Self mutating and in a semi-intelligent way. Maybe even with a piece of AI-software coded with fuzzy-logic or a neural network wich learns maybe even look at failures of other mutations of itself and adapting to work around that. Now that would be a scary virus/worm/trojan, wathever it becomes.

This is just job security in action. Just like the seismologists that have been saying for 50 years that Ca. is in for "The Big One", anytime now. Well no duh, sparky.

True, leaving the defense of a network up to the users is, for all intents and purposes, suicide. What can you do to hold them accountable? The internet was founded on the concept of sharing of ideas. The good comes with the bad, IMO. Either learn for yourself and be part of the solution or stay ignorant and be part of the problem.

echo looks around, that was an interesting article. and just "how" does this guy know what the next attack is going to be? looks like he was giving ideas to ppl on how to do things? i don't know and i hate to yell "its all a plot" too much you guys will just think i'm a radical idiot or something. but you know....when i go to an offical adware removal site: trapzappers (id'd to remove alexa from your system)...and i download and check for stuff, they pick up like 49 files and etc. then i go to my ad-aware6 program (which hadn't caught them) and scan again and i have 18 new infected files from the trapzapper program......it just makes me wonder. its scarey, and theres just a few of us taking this seriously....*worries*

nods to above about "mom", sounds like my mom...hates computers, has one, isn't on line that much, but is some. won't update her software...and probably not her virus protection either.....
nods again, in another site someone had infected it with a worm that disguised itself as a cookie from a porn site. this was spread in an e-mail sent to members from the administration of the site!!!!
