If my understanding is correct, it is nothing like a LAN at all.

The computers are sharing a phone line, not a network. Only one of the 3 machines (2x Computer 1x Satellite) can be connected at once and therefore can not communicate.

If the PC has been hacked then it's been by someone else or by physical access to the machine.

Since only 1 PC can be online at once then your PC can not be controlled by your room mate, and it can only be controlled externally if you are on line.

Is your XP up to date? I am betting it is not.

Next time you are online type netsat -aon from a prompt & post the results back here.

go to the command line and type : "netstat -an" > text.txt

now post the text.txt here (or at least the contents), here we can see if something is listening to a certain port what shouldn't be there....

could be a trojan, or even more simple, just netcat with a -e cmd.exe to give the attacker a cmd when he connects to a certain port of yours...
and netcat won't be seen as a trojan!
