You know I often wondered what that warm feeling was when working on PC.. And i thought it was the view from my office over the retail floor of the shop and all the 18-19 yr old mums.... I wish I could have recorded some of the conversations these girls had near the computer retail display.. certainly give MB's stories a good challenge ..

I've spent the last 30 years around equipment that radiates and transmits and although they glow in the dark, they still swim. In fact it's fun to shut the lights out and watch them swim up stream in the tubes.....

Not much good for bait, kinda too small to put on the hooks.

The reason your question was greeted with some amusement is that it is an "urban myth", one of those scare stories that people like to put around to frighten people. I have found that the best way to deal with these scare stories is to treat them with humour and the contempt that they deserve. A "scientific explanation" that is not understood is just as bad, if not worse than the original myth, because people tend to think that if they cannot understand what you are telling them, you must be trying to trick them.

Und3ertak3r (who has a very sound knowledge of electronics) has given you the scientific explanation. A PC is just not powerful enough to generate harmful Radio Frequency emissions.

A few minutes ago, I dug out my microwave detector and tried it on my PC.............the needle did not even move!

In the early days of colour televisions there were "significant" emissions from the screen, but that was a long time ago. Somewhere I have a pamphlet from the European Health & Safety Executive that explains that modern computer monitors are quite safe. The fact that they printed it, shows that there was a general concern, but that is the monitor, not the computer.

Und3ertak3r mentioned an 800Watt magnetron. The magnetron is the microwave generator inside a microwave oven. As he said this WOULD cook you at ranges of around 750mm to 1000mm. But we all know that a leaking microwave oven is a dangerous device?

PCs don't have magnetrons, they generate a small amount of RF "interference" as a by product of their operation. As Und3ertak3r pointed out, the purpose of the case is to prevent the PC interferring with other devices in your environment, NOT to protect you.

My years of experience of dealing with non-specialist people is that it is better to make a joke of something, than attempt a scientific explanation. Hey, if they understood the scientific explanation, they knew enough not to ask the question in the first place?

I worked in Spain for a couple of years 1980 - 1981, using microwave transmitters to plot navigation tables for the oil industry, we used 3500w TX's and they could fry seagulls at 1000m....... Also, we could hard boil eggs by throwing them into the beam path........

The 'down' side was that the second harmonic played havoc (read wrecked) with the locals TV's. My own set of spherical danglers do not appear to be any the worse for the experience. Which is more than can be said for the seagulls.
