Virus Doubt!
Hello All:
Can viruses destroy just files or can they harm the processor, harddrive, or any hardware ??

Generally it's just files .. But there are some and it is a posibility in the near Future that we will have some

Hi,
The simple answer is that a virus could theoretically damage your hardware, but I have not seen one yet.
What you might like to do is look for details of the CIH and Magistr viruses......do a google search to find the relevant AV company analyses (because the AV companies use different names)
Both will flash your BIOS.....or try to......
This means that your computer may well need hardware engineering repairs.

Hardware damaging viruses are nothing new honestly. They were "invented" back in the good ole BBS days... A BBS running off of a Commie 64 with a couple of disk drives... occasionally when a cracker wanted to take one down, he would put the drives into a constant read loop. This would burn out the drive.
How hard would it be to design a virus for Linux that would damage part of the ACPI implementation (fan module, thermal zone, etc..)? Linux is very vulnerable right now because vendors keep claiming it's immune to virii.
Real security doesn't come with an installer.

Hard Disk Killer and Hard Drive Killer Pro are two widely known of those kind's of virii and they are hardware-affected. So to answer your question, yes. A virus can destroy anything ranging from files to software to hardware.

hmm yeah,I saw a piece of C code that used pointers in an indefinite loop the other day...if run,the program would eventually damage your harddrive

what about changing someones voltage for cpu settings in bios?

I'v seen one that changes the horz. freq and the vert freq for the video output and that could damage a monitor
