Free Space Wiping Utility

Does anyone here wipe the free space on their drive before? Can you recommend any good freeware utility? Last time I used Clean Disk Security and it corrupted some of my files. Now I am thinking of using the program call Eraser to wipe the free space but I do not want to risk damaging my files again.

The free one im not sure, but I'm using McAfee Quickclean Lite.

For DOS / FAT you could try scorch or scour. Obviously run them in DOS mode - create a batch file or something.

Unfortunately I don't know of any tools which do this for other fs. Additionally, it is desirable to do free space wiping while the OS is not active (i.e. under DOS or something else booted from floppy). That way you can trash the swapfile and temp files and guarantee they're not in use.

Just out of curiosity... Did you defrag your HD before you ran the utility? IIRC, if you don't defrag beforehand, it might mess with some of the files.

naw. All the wiping util does is overwrite the disk with hex values.

I saw some of them create a lot of dummy files to fill up the space on the drive and delete them. How effective is this solution?
