    Unix newbie needs help.

alright heres the deal, I was talking to one of the higher level guys in my company and he told me that if i were to become very familiar with unix that I would have a very good chance of getting a $22.00/hr raise and a promotion. So naturally I said ok Im going to lean unix/linix. My question is where should I start. What books should I read to learn the basics of both platforms and where should I look to for more of the advanced stuff. My company has alot of the software and I have access to it all since I am learning it for them. any help is greatly apprecieated.

First, if you have no experience whatsoever with *NIX, I'd recommend picking up a copy of either Linux for Dummies or UNIX for Dummies depending on what you want to learn. After that, the net just has more than enough information to get you on your way to becoming a *NIX guru.

thanks all, Im picking up the "for dummies" books today along with one of the "learn in 24 hours" books. I figure they will give me the basics and will be straight forward, then from their Im going to find everything and anything, and I got a version of free bsd installed at work that im going to full around with. thanks alot for the links.

You could start by installing RedHat 9.0 and playing around with that.
