    Code Questions forum

Hi, before I start I would like to explain that I found two similar threads which seemed to be giving the same suggestion, but I'm not totally convinced that they were quite the same. In any case, I figure that in this case posting it again is perhaps for the benefit of the site. I also want to explain that I'm having to write this out again because mozilla crashed just after I'd finished writing it .

Anyhow, what I would like to suggest is that as well as a Code Review forum we have a "Code Questions" forum (obviously it doesn't have to be called that) where anyone can ask whatever questions they like to do with programming that isn't strictly security related. I ask this because my interpretation of the name "Code Review" is that it is a place where people can post code that they have written and other members will then check it and give feedback on it (review it...). The majority of the threads in the code review forum at the moment seem to be about getting help with bugs in code or asking how to do something. One question that seems to have been coming up quite often recently is "Which language should I start with?" or something along those lines.

If a Code Questions forum was created, all the non-review threads in code review could be moved to make both forums more logical and easier to browse and a sticky could be made which attempted to answer some of the more common questions.

I'm not sure if anyone else really cares about this, but since programming is one of my favourite activities and the main reason I come to this site, I do. It actually annoys me quite a lot the way that there doesn't seem to be much reviewing done in the code review forum, but I guess I am quite picky about certain issues.

The two following links are to the other threads that seem to be asking similar questions.

A Code Questions forum isn't a bad idea, although I would suggest seeking out a site dedicated to your language of choice for anything intermidiate to advanced.

    I like this idea Gothic.
I don't really post in the Code Review area as i don't have any code that i need Reviewed, so it would defiantly be a good feature that could be added to the site..
And it would give a place for the budding coder to go to get ideas, learn etc etc.
So me thinks that it would be something worth implementing.

    cheers

spurious_inode, I realise that I should seek out a site that has specific information about the languages that I use if I need to ask questions, but the fact is that I like this site. Also, there are already so many threads in code review that aren't anything to do with reviewing code, which is why I decided to start this thread.

I like the idea of a code questions forum; particularly where this is a security site, and perhaps some security-related coding questions could show up now and then.

If the idea takes off, I'd be happy to participate. Perhaps specific practices and functions to avoid would be a good starting point (e.g. gets, strcpy, etc.) for a 'Secure Programming FAQ'.
