Hello, I was just wondering what ways which people can be affected,How to defend against and keep them away?

Also what is a packet attack, I dont see how an attack could be started by sending a packet?
Please help as i am a noob and am not clever in this area
Of course i would like to become more intelligent and one day be likke you guys.
