Thread: CWS Invasion HELP PLEASE!

    CWS Invasion HELP PLEASE!

I know there is a lot said about this already on this forum, and I have tried to follow what's been said, but I can't seem to get rid of this! I'm beginning to feel too old to learn new tricks!

I have little installed on my new CPU except virus programs and anti-spyware! Did not have time to reinstall old applications from a computer with fried capacitors (my surge protector failed) because this spyware s**t hit so fast!

I have tried to follow all the discussion threads, but nothing seems to get rid of this! All I want to do is go back to emailing my granddaughter and paying some bills online. PLEASE HELP me understand what to do!

This is the Highjack log (in safe mode):

Here you go -this should clear uo the CWS. THere are a few other things you need to do after as well:

Windows Updates - get all CRITICAl ones

    1. Download reglite
    2. install "Reglite" and run it, enter HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\ into the address bar.
    3. Double click on AppInit_DLLs to open a "Data Editor" properties window, if the bottom textfield named "Value" contains a .dll file; then this is the hidden file you need to get rid off.
    4. You should not be able to delete this file if you try to clear the value field, IMPORTANT: take note of the path and name of the .dll file. Write it down so you do not forget it.
    5. Rename the Folder "Windows" (This is a purple "highlighted" folder in the left hand window) to NOTWINDOWS. Simply click on the folder, click on "Edit" in the menu bar and select "Rename".
    6. Click AppInit_DLLs again and clear the value containing the .dll and ok it. This should have removed the .dll
    7. Rename the windows folder back to its original name "Windows".
    8. Run SpyBot, Ad-Aware and CWShredder
    9. Check the following three links for instructions on downloading and running the applications listed:
    10. Next step will be to remove this dll file so make sure you have it noted down.
    11. Procedure 1
      • Download KillBox
      • Unzip and start the application
      • Paste in the dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> e.g. C:\Windows\System32\nameofdll.dll
      • Menu Select Action => Delete on Reboot
      • Select File => Add file <It should add the path automatically>
      • <Same Window> Select Action => Process and Reboot
    12. Procedure 2 (If Procedure 1 did not work)
      • Click "Start" => "Run" and type in "cmd" (Without the quotations) and click on "Okay".
      • This will open a command window I will assume you have a basic knowledge of DOS if you have any problems at this point just write back I will outline the commands.
      • Type in dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> and press "Enter". You should see the name of the file listed.
      • Go to the system32 folder (This is where the .dll file will typically reside) and type attrib -R "nameofdll".dll
      • Carry out Procedure 1 again

    13. Restart your computer in safemode (How do I boot into "Safe" mode?)
    14. Open cmd window again as before
    15. Type dir <path and name of dll as found in the appinit value box> and locate the dll name the dll should now have been removed and will not be listed.
    16. While in safe mode, run the 3 ad-removal programs again, just to make sure all traces are gone.
    17. Boot up pc as normal post another HijackThis log into this message for further review.

CWShredder actually won't work on this particular brand of CWS. Hopefully soon it will be updated to include this variety. The most CWShredder will do now is force the CWS to mutate just a bit further. It may give the user a few minutes reprieve, but the CWS will come back with a vengeance.

    Didn't work.

First of all, there was NO dll file where indicated, so there was nothing to delete. I ran Spybot and it found something called DSO Exploit (5 instances) and removed it. Ad-Aware found another instance of CWS (i ran it twice, and the CWS was there both times...it was gone the third time). I also ran CWShredder. Here is the Highjack log after all this:

Pop-ups came back with a vengence as soon as I logged into the internet again. First time it so clogged up my system I had to shut down and reboot. Second time, it opened almost every pop-up window possible, but I was able to get logged in and send this message.

Any other thoughts? The first time (above) my waol Mem Usage in the Task Manager was out of sight and climbing! I also got a message from AOL that I was logged into AOL Messenger in two places!

I ran Highjack one more time, to see if it was the same after all those irritating pop-ups and that AOL message that I was logged-in twice! This is what the log shows:

The above link is from Soda_Popinsky; It is a Tut for the use of Hi-Jack This.

Use your problem, turn it into a learning curve, albeit a damn severe curve.
so now I'm in my SIXTIES FFS

Now you have a different type of CWS infection, this one can't be removed by the shreddder. But it's a little easier than the last one..

Put a checkmark next to the following in HijackThis. Make sure all other windows and browsers are closed before clicking on “Fix Checked”

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

CWShredder or HijackThis closes immediately after opening?
There is a variant of the Coolwebsearch trojan spreading that closes several anti-spyware apps when you try to open them.
If this is happening to you, download PepiMK's CoolWWWSearch.SmartKiller removal tool first and run it. After it does its job, CWShredder and HijackThis will run properly (as well Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and several anti-spyware forums).

    Here's the file: http://www.safer-networking.org/files/delcwssk.zip

Try that, and run CWS shreder again.

Question. Which BHO? Or does that become obvious after I install APM?
