Thread: W2k SP4 Update Failure

  1. #1

    Question W2k SP4 Update Failure

I have a W2k machine that I can't get to update to SP4 to save my life. Every time I try, I get this rather odd message:

The file c:\program files\outlook express\msimn.exe is open or in use by another application.
Funny thing is, Outlook isn't running, and msimn.exe isn't shown as running in task manager either.

No luck in safe mode either.

    Anyone run into this issue?

Is this the network install (downloaded) or just through Windows Update? If its through Windows update, try downloading the network install.

How about possibly removing Outlook Express from Components within Add/Remove Programs then give it another try. Unless you are using Outlook Express, that is...

Duh! *smacks own forehead* Remove OE, which we indeed don't need. Geez, why didn't I think of that? I have an amazing ability of overlooking the obvious. I'll give it a try.

Hmm, well, this is rather odd. OE isn't shown in Add/Remove Windows components, and in Program Files it's listed but can't be found if double-clicked, so something is awry (user messed something up somewhere I wonder?).

No, but CA hasn't interfered with the various other computers I've run the update on (though I totally agree CA is crap!!). Given it's an Outlook Express executable that's preventing the installation, it shouldn't be CA.

You are on SP1, When we updated any S/Ware at my previous employer (me Elec Eng ) They always 'tried' to go up in small steps.

On MS this link to the SP's http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=260910
so now I'm in my SIXTIES FFS
WTAF, how did that happen, so no more alterations to the sig, it will remain as is now
