Well since the easy fix doesn't seem to be working (for anyone at all lately ) we will have to do the more complex fix.

This is for Win2K and Win XP only.
There are usually 2 exes with this, the R* entry dll and a BHO dll. One exe is a service and apparently they both watch each other. Both exe's should show in the HJT running process list.

    === Remove Exploit ===
    1. Make sure your settings allow you to view "Hidden files". Open up any explorer windows and click on "Tools" => "Folder Options" => "View" and be sure to check off "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
    2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete once => Click Task Manager => Click the Processes tab => Double-click the Image Name column header to alphabetically sort the processes => Scroll through the list and look for " ieoh.exe " & " winal.exe ". If you find the files, click on them, and then click End Process => Exit the Task Manager.
    3. Next, go to Start->Run and type "Services.msc" (without quotes) then hit OK.
    4. Scroll down and find the service called "Network Security Service".
    5. When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK and close any open windows.
    6. Run HijackThis, click on "Scan" and then place a check mark in the following boxes, And click on "Fix Checked":

      R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwafi.dll/sp.html#96676
      R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://iwafi.dll/index.html#96676
      R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://iwafi.dll/index.html#96676
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwafi.dll/sp.html#96676
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://iwafi.dll/index.html#96676
      R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\iwafi.dll/sp.html#96676
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9DCC21EB-9E73-1C71-85DE-CA0AD61BEDA8} - C:\WINDOWS\ietl.dll
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ieoh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieoh.exe
    7. Reboot into Safe Mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?, and delete the following files:

      winal.exe
      ieoh.exe
      iwafi.dll
    8. Go to Start => Run and type in "regedit" (without quotes) and press "Enter".
    9. One the registry opens, Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\__NS_Service_3
If __NS_Service_3 exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
    10. Still in the registry, navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3
If LEGACY___NS_Service_3 exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.
    11. Exit regedit and reboot in Normal Mode.
    12. Two files (Possibly three) were also deleted from your computer and need to be replaced.
      • control.exe - Go to Merijn Files (control) and download the version of control.exe for your operating system. If you are running Windows 2000, copy it to c:\winnt\system32\. For Windows XP, copy it to c:\windows\system32\.
      • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
      • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)
    13. Run HiJackThis again and post a new log in this thread.
    Remember to cross your fingers

I have followed those instruction. I Have not downloaded the 2 new files i need to replace yet i want to make sure everything is OK before i do that. NOTE: When i was in safe mode and searching for the 3 files to delete "iwafi.dll" couldnt be found when i did a search, the other 2 i deleted. Also, when i was in the registry the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\ENUM \Root\LEGACY_NS_Service_3 did not exist. Here is my new log file. Thanks.

Dang, I see you forgot to cross your fingers! Seriously, this is an incredibly annoying infection - it takes multiple tries and lots of patience. Just keep at it - eventually we will get this little bugger!

    Let's try this:

Please do not open Internet Explorer during any portion of this process.

Please make sure that you can view all hidden files. Instructions on how to do this can be found here:

How to see hidden files in Windows

    Step 1:

Click on start, the control panel, then administrative programs, then services. Look for a service called Network Security Service. Double click on the that service and click stop. Also write down the name and path of the file listed in the Path to executable field. This filename must be deleted below.

    Step 2:

Press control-alt-delete to get into the task manager and end the follow processes if they exist:

    • the name of the file from the service above (it may be one of the following)
      iphm32.exe
      ieoh.exe

    Step 3:
I now need you to delete the following files:

The file from the services above (it may be one of the following)
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieoh.exe
    iphm32.exe
    addhj.dll
    utxyj.dll

Also delete any files that have the same name as these files but end with a dll. You should see them right next to each other.

If you get an error when deleting a file. Right click on the file and check to see if the read only attribute is checked. if it is uncheck it and try again.

    Step 4:
Then run hijackthis and fix these entries:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\utxyj.dll/sp.html#96676
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://utxyj.dll/index.html#96676
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://utxyj.dll/index.html#96676
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\utxyj.dll/sp.html#96676
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://utxyj.dll/index.html#96676
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\utxyj.dll/sp.html#96676
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7DD6BF95-EB84-0559-D846-FF6A7418A53A} - C:\WINDOWS\addhj.dll
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ieoh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieoh.exe

    Step 5:

In the next step we are going to remove a service that gets installed by this malware. The service will always start with __NS_Service. For the purposes of this step, we will assume that it is called NS_Service_3 but may be called something differently on your computer.

Go to Start>Run and type regedit.

    Press enter.

    Navigate to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\__NS_Service_3

If __NS_Service_3 exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    Now navigate to:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY___NS_Service_3

    If LEGACY___NS_Service_3
exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

    Step 6:

Restore files deleted by this malware.

    • Download the Hoster from here. Press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program. This will restore the original deleted Hosts file.
    • If you have Spybot S&D installed you will also need to replace one file. Go here: Merijn's Files (sdhelper) and download SDHelper.dll. Copy the file to the folder containing you Spybot S&D program (normally C:\Program Files\Spybot - Search & Destroy)

This is my new log. Note: I am not sure where to delete the files from in step 3 of your directions:

Note 2: When i am in Regedit it will not let me delete HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Currentcontrolset\Enum\root\LEGACY__NS_Service_3 it says error while deleting key.

    Thanks again for the help

Before we go any further, I need to know that you have not rebooted or closed IE since the last log. If you have done either then the names change....

Let me know! And no more rebooting or closing IE!!

They've recently (today!) updated About:Buster and are having better results with it now. Make sure you have the newest version by d/ling it again and follow this:

Run HijackThis again and place a check beside each of the following items. Once done click the fix checked button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [ipuv32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ipuv32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [adday32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\adday32.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [mfcij.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcij.exe

Download About:Buster from either of the following locations.

    http://www.atribune.org/downloads/AboutBuster.zip
    or
    http://tools.zerosrealm.com/AboutBuster.zip

Make sure you have printed this page and close ALL Internet Explorer windows. This is a very important step!!

Run AboutBuster.exe, click ok, then start, then OK. Make a copy of the log once it finishes. Then run aboutbuster.exe again. Make a copy of that log.

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log along with the two reports from About:Buster.
