The key "that can be found on the back of your computer" is the product key.

The attached program (Belarc System Advisor) gives you your Windows key, plus all the other keys of all software on your box. Or you could just get them from the registry

The key "that can be found on the back of your computer" is the product key.
Which you can use to activate your copy of windows. Thats why i called it activation key !

You don't use that key to activate Windows. The product key is the key that you enter at the beginning of the Windows installation. It's probably used by MS to activate your product, though (along with hardware profile, registration key,...).

And then there's the registration key (which you can find by right-clicking My Computer, under the General Tab where it says Registered to: ).

If it is not on a sticker on the back of your equipment (bottom for a laptop) then use the program Negative gave you or use this (see attachment) for just your XP Application (Product) key.

maybe its beacuse i use a cracked version of windows xp and the serial number has been used couple of million times before so they ask me for a "valid" number, thats when i entered the one from the back of my computer to activate windows, not install!
