yea I had a problem similar to this what i did was I used knoppix, booted using that and then copied the config file for X onto floppy and boot back into my installed system and them replaced the offending file witht he knoppix version, it worked great for me... (im not a 100% on the name of the actually config file its something like X86config - can someone suggest it??)

another thing to watch out for like i found out is what the install sets as the default runlevels. if the system boots to the prompt and asks you to login?

well if thats the case then its probably ur runlevels thats need setting, im not sure about debian, i assume it uses a similar fielsystem as other linux distros but there in your /etc/inittab file.

at present if it is the runlevels is booting into runlevel 3, you probably want to go to runlevel 4. Edit the default line of the /etc/inittab file from 3 to 4, the default line is near the top of the file.

Try the command XFree86 -configure it should give you a basic working configuration that you can then tweak.
