    Administering P2P

    Hi guys,

Is it possible for the isp provider or network admintrator to keep track of files sent by p2p? Or by Yahoo messenger? insomuch that they could specify the extension / size of the file?

I'm pretty sure they couldn't keep track really, depending on the ISP and how they work. If they did, then they must have some spyware involved in it's service or something. And if so, I doubt they'd be able to specify the size of the file.

    SURE

Sure, I understand that its sound suspicious. So here it is:

This is Saudi Arabia, any file short of having 'girl','sex','cross','christ','pic', etc, etc. Tends to attract attention. Now, since I would rather much stay here I don't want to 'piss' (for want of a better word I assure you) the adminstrator and get sent back home.

I am an overseas worker, and no I am not muslim.

    I hope this clears me.

yes and no. If a network admin notices a lot of bandwidth being used from a machine (if he's monitoring) then he'll get suspicious and probably keep an eye on you. Doesn't Yahoo messenger save teh files its own folder? As for P2P, they are saved in the shared folder. Even if you delete them...if someone really wanted to dig, they can recover them.

An ISP is unlikely to monitor downloads...but a network admin might notice.

    WOAH

Okay, So I am at my home pc and connect via dsl modem to the company ISP provider and IF there is a lot bandwith say how much bandwith would that be the admin is going to get suspicious? The firewall this company using is so intense, that pips can't upload from me. So I practically have about say less 10 KB per second getting through.
I am probably babling already, but is there a way for me to keep my files to myself more securely? You mentioned the shared folders, what if I 'secure' it the normal ways, (PASS, HIDE FOLDER) will that help?
But I would really like to know is if pips can know what kind of file I am downloading the moment I iniate it.
    Thanks

Not likely, but I'm not sure of the laws and security procedures in Saudi Arabia, so I wouldn't have a definite answer for you. You could try visiting just one porn site, open the pictures instead of downloading and saving them to yoru computer, and clean history/temp internet files. Again, it depends if someone is actually going through the logs and monitoring what sites people are visiting.

Uh no, I'm sure about that since I work in the networking department, I review requests of people who wants web bages unblocked/blocked. Note I just reveiw them I don't do the actual blocking. Though most of them are automatically blocked anyway by 'websense', but for those pips who did got through they ended up going home.
I actually think that I am safe, but since its my job and all I can't help being paranoid.
Thank you very much though, this is my first thread, and although I am still not sure whether p2p here is safe or not, you guys gave me a some ideas.
So if you guys have any more information about this I would greatly appreciate it.
    thanks again!

ISPs certainly could block this (see this link for CISCO pix ruleset or type "blocking P2P downloads"). It's not unusual for ISPs to notice things like download amounts and disconnect/prevent users from downloading. Blocking based on the name is a fruitless task since the file can be renamed.

That said, I would suspect that Saudi Arabia might have some specific laws but sometimes "foreign" workers are not included in those laws.

One way to get around it (note: I'm not recommending you circumvent it as you might find yourself in deeper trouble -- you might want to ask what exactly the laws are in regards to this kind of stuff) would be to do an SSH tunnel and have the traffic downloaded that way.
