have you tried to do this a after formatting it.
Go into your labtop and physically dismount and remount anything that you can easyily undo and remount it all.
And since windows XP has a great hardware detection it should detect all of what you remounted.
And then you should install al drivers for them if you have any.
Or use the auto install XP gives you...

    Have you tried this?

sounds like a potentially dying IDE cable (or whatever laptops use), you may want to try a different IDE cable, cables can die from too much heat as its happened to me before.

had a LAN one nite here in australia, was a really hot night in a tin shed of all things...., pc's were shutting down fro heat probs and such, and i manged to stuff both of my IDE cables from the heat, and started gettin delayed write fail errors and BSOD's, after replacing the cables the puta has been fine since.

the fan prob may not be causing what you are receiving, but would be a good idea to get it fixed anyway, the extra heat can't be good for ya hardware.
Just wait till i get my slappin gloves on.....
