Bush Should Listen To His Elders
A lesson not learned
In his memoirs, "A World Transformed," written five years ago, George Bush Sr. wrote the following explanation of why he did NOT go after Saddam Hussein at the end of the Gulf War.
Trying to eliminate Saddam...would have incurred incalculable human and political costs. Apprehending him was probably impossible.... We would have been forced to occupy Baghdad and, in effect, rule Iraq....There was no viable "exit strategy" we could see, violating another of our principles.
Furthermore, we had been consciously trying to set a pattern for handling aggression in the post-Cold War world. Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the United Nations' mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression that we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the United States could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land."
If only George W could read. I have heard fairly frequent rumors that Bush Sr. does not approve of George W's policies and is completely against his Iraq and "War on Terror" policies, but that he bites his tongue to support his son and his party.
I hate that sort of blanket party support though. Being in a political party should not mean that you lose common sense or the right to your own opinion. So- Bush Sr. sits back and watches the country fall apart under his son, and Senator McCain refuses to speak out or challenge the administration while voicing his support from behind gritted teeth and a fake smile.
