Thanks i wasnt sure if wininit might of been a valid program and wininit32 a trojan so if u see it you might mistake it for the valid program and leave it alone.

Well it seems like it's time to ask THE question:
Have you ran the AO holy trinity ? ...................
AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
SpyBot S+D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html
HiJackThis: http://www.net-integration.net/tools/hijackthis.html
The HJT home site is down for repair / modding at the moment. Use the above, AND READ THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE PAGE ..........
[I know he has SpyBot, but this IS the TRINITY, and I don't know a cute way of saying 'two' ]
Get HJT. Make a new folder in your C drive, D/L it to THERE.
HJT is a piece of S/W that will find and record EVERYTHING that is running on your PC, it gives you a VERY powerful capability. Use it with CARE ........
Follow the instructions, get a log, save it to notepad as a .TXT file. Post that here, and let 'us', actually it will probably be Groovicus or meeeeeee, respond.
DO NOT DELETE ANYTHING YOURSELF ............
There is a wealth of info on site re:- HJT; whilst waiting for someone to respond, read the following thread:
http://www.antionline.com/showthread...hreadid=255989
it is a Tut on HJT Usage by Soda_Popinsky.
It is a very good Tut, but it is still not advised to delete willy nilly until you have been advised about the best way to continue.
so now I'm in my SIXTIES FFS
WTAF, how did that happen, so no more alterations to the sig, it will remain as is now

I got rid of wininit.exe from my computer last night, i wake up this morning and find that my computer now refuses to turn on, it seems to load up fine but after it gets to the point where it searches for boot files from a floppy disc it says:
''mode select code page function completed
c:/windows/wininit.exe
press any key to continue''
so i press a key and then my computer turns off.
does anyone know how and/or why this happens? I think i may just send it away to be fixed if theres nothing i can do.
(Im on a laptop before anyone asks)
Thanks

and we all run off again.. never asking nor offering WHAT THE OPERATING SYSTEM IS...
One member of the Holy Trinity that was also missed ..WWW.GOOGLE.COM
and what was that site with the searchable list of known file names ?
To repair the problem?
Have you tried starting the System in SAFE MODE..?
from there you can run the system file checker..SFC.. but being Win98 you may have a problem if you need to get any files from the OS CD.. but ONE STEP AT A TIME..
Can you start in safe mode?
Cheers
